Some "Smutty" thoughts...

Sorry to ambush you, but do I have your attention?

I am copying some thoughts I posted in a different thread.

The Chit Chat forum got out of control in several ways -- thus the changes that John is making, and also my thoughts below.

These are my comments alone, and may not reflect the opinions of the management or other moderators:

"I've given this whole situation a fair amount of thought over the past day, and have decided that I personally need to be a little more pro-active with "questionable" posts. I know that will anger some, but a quick, non-scientific poll of PM's, posts and comments from other moderators seem to indicate to me that "most" people are getting tired of posts that border on "smutty" stuff.

There are right, well thought out ways, of asking legitimate questions.

Words used for their shock value are unnecessary and unwanted. Personal attacks on people, their family and their organizations are wrong.

There have been a number of people who have stopped visiting Chit Chat -- some who come to GC much less -- and some who used to recommend GC to PNM's and others who have stopped doing that because of the tenor of the threads and posts on Chit Chat.

It seems to me that this has hurt the BB overall.

It is important to remember that this overall forum is for GREEK matters. "The whole of an organization is only as strong as the sum of it's parts." That rough quote is from an Ohio University alumni publication that I read, and I'm sorry I can't remember the author, but I think it applies here as well as many other places.

If offensive threads hurt the overall, then they have no place here.

Who decides what is "offensive." I guess John and the Moderators do. To put it simply, "Moderators moderate." In some cases, that may turn into what seems like thinly veiled censorship. So be it. The root word of Moderator is "moderate." The threads and posts on Chit Chat have gotten a long way from that.

If you want to talk about real sexual issues, that's fine. Talk about them like adults, and avoid slang terms that may offend. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and good taste.

If you have a question regarding taste, check your pledge manuals or the thoughts of your organizations founders. I think you will find some answers there.

Note that the low end age for registering is thirteen. Also, remember that a lot of young people or parents of young people can find this forum with a simple Google search or other search engine.

We can do great harm here.

If you think that's not your problem, and you want carte blanche to be crude, then maybe you don't belong here. There are a lot of other sites who cater to those kinds of things.

To borrow a thought from my profession, consider who the audience is, and what they hope to gain from their visit(s) with us.

Thank you for your consideration of my thoughts above.

Glad to see the changes and the move towards being pro-active regarding the trash talk that has no place here!

Deletions...

"Personal attacks on people, their family and their organizations are wrong."

I am deleting several posts naming a particular moderator due to the above.

They are personal.

If the moderator in question makes a personal attack here, I will do the same.

Let's take it somewhere else.

Edited to add quotation marks to my quote above.

FYI, I am "sticking" this at the top of the forum temporarily in the hope that everyone involved has the chance to read it.

I will release it in a couple of weeks.

I'd like you to step back and review this for a second. Is there a personal attack or are facts and words of a previous mod being repeated?

I know you're friends with that mod. I know you probably talk to him even outside of greekchat because hey when you're older and care about fraternities, you tend to do that sort of thing from what I see. So this puts you in an awkward position.

The fact is that I'm clearly right but as right as I am you don't see that as being too nice. If you feel that it's so necessary that I drop this, then PM me and I just might. Otherwise, I'll keep going on and on and on until that mod realizes how they act and that I wouldn't have pointed out how they act until they decided to say something foolish and untrue about me.

Rudey,

You are welcome to that opinion. I don't entirely agree with you in this case. However, since your comments don't name names and are only on the verge of being a personal attack (I think everyone can figure out who you're talking about), I will not delete your post.

We are all likely, and even welcome to disagree one some things (I've just done that with you in this case), but, as someone posted somewhere else, I will try to insist that we disagree as adults and "play nice."

Of course, you may feel free to PM me as you have in the past.

Edited to add: The mod you speak of and I have spoken only one time outside of GC, and I don't feel the least bit awkward.

Thanks.

You asked for a PM and you got it. If you want, publicly post it here. I stand by my words.

Rudey, you know and I know it's a lost cause.

DeltAlum, thanks for the insight. I agree with you 110%.

Lost or not i'll keep saying it until everyone shuts up.

Let's look at the last few days:

(The Moderator in question) says something and I break down everything he says and remind him of what he really is.

(Another moderator) tells me to shutup when she's done this to an even higher extent. I guess now she finds it annoying but before she didn't.

DeltAlum tells me I'm attacking someone. I respond and my post stays up. If any of you don't like what's said in that post, swallow it up. If you find something wrong with that post, let me know so I can swallow it.

-Rudey
--Is it ok I named names or is this one going to get deleted too?

DeltAlum note: I added the ( ) and dropped the names because I don't want to delete Rudey's arugment. Nothing else was changed.

Rudey, search on my posts and compare the number of comments I've made "against" Hoosier to the number of comments you've made "against" (a moderator.)

If I have more than you, fine, you win the argument.

I find it annoying now because you used to be really cool and now you consider it your mission to convert (The moderator) into William F. Buckley.

Whatever.

DeltAlum note: I did not drop 33girls name since she has identified herself as the other moderator. I dropped the other moderators name only because I did it on Rudey's post and don't want him to feel I'm being unfair.

I don't intend to make a habit of editing other people's posts and dropping names, etc. I hope the circumstces here make it worthwhile.

I'm going to lock my own thread because it's getting as acrimonious as a the problem I'm trying to deal with.

Rudey, I returned your PM. I'm sure we'll be chatting again soon.

Since things seem to have gotten a lot more civil, I'm going to open and unstick this thread and let it float away.

Thanks for your help in making Chit Chat a more friendly place.

Even some of our former posters who left are filtering back!
