Berkely Rush question

Hey All !!!!
I will be rushing at UC berkely this fall !! I just found this site and I'm sooo excited ! It is a wealth of information just reading the other ladies who are going to go through has helped me feel more prepared... I have a question though... I was reading about getting Recs for chapters... does anyone know if this is necessary at Berkely ? Also does anyone have any general advice about rush at Cal ?? I know there are 13 sororities.. but how dressy is it there and everything ? Soo excited !! need guidance THANKS !!!!

Congratulations and good luck! Rush at Cal is very relaxed and not as competitive as a lot of the big Southern California greek systems. There are 13 wonderful groups to choose from and houses are beautiful!

While recs are always helpful, I am unaware of them being necessary for any group at Cal.

Good luck!

Laura

Hi Calgrl09!

Like lauradav said, good luck! Here are a few websites I found that might help you out:

http://www.calgreeks.com/recruitment/events.htm

http://www.calgreeks.com/chapters/sororities.htm

I actually helped our chapter out during recruitment one year and I was there for Preference Night. A lot of the girls were in cute dresses or slacks and a cute sweater. It gets a little chilly at night, so bring a sweater and wear comfy shoes! I'm sure any other questions you have can be e-mailed to the VP Membership or at Orientation. Have fun and be sure to keep us updated!

I'd love to read a Berkeley rush story, and it sounds like there are some great sororities there.

As for recs, from what I've heard Cal's pretty much the same as at my school -- recs will help you out, but they're definitely not necessary like they are at some of the Southern schools.

Ok I have several options about what to wear for pref.. HOPEFULLY I make it that far ! Let me know what you all think... if you think none are appropriate ... I will be *forced* Into doing some more shopping.

1st: black and red sheer fabric printed to look like delicate black lace over red, over a lining of pure red. Handkerchif hem with the longest points just below the knee the shortest parts just bearly above... problem is it has spaghetti straps. The overall dress isn't clubby or anything and the neck line is straight across and not low cut.. so I think it looks pretty classy but I've read admonitions not to go spaghetti or strapless.. so... what do y'all think ?

2nd dress: Some of you may have seen it at Express.. it's severak shades pink small floraly pattern with a drapy cowel neck and little cap sleeves... flowy skirt to about mid calf. I have the CUTEST shoes for this dress that are pink and have one strap across the toe and three inch heels or so... they lace up with ribbon a- la ballerina toe shoes could just be the dancer in me BUT I LOVE EM the problem with this one is I'm not quite sure I see myself wearing it for an evening event.. I mean the shoes dress it up a bit and the jewelery I'll be wearing is more evening-ish... but I bought it for a wedding.. so I kinda feel it's more of a afternoon/ out doorsey type of a dress... but i'm pretty sure not too many people will be wearing pink.. so.. I dunno...

3rd: is a sheer black with black floral embroidery over black linking with a asymetric hem the longer part below my knee the shorter part above my knee. the neck line is slightly V and it has spaghetti straps too

so what do you all think ? Do I need to do some shopping or is one of these going to do the trick do you think ?? Also I'm going to be a sophomore with only one semester to go until I'm a JR. does anyone know if Berkely is a more freshman oriented rush or if transfers have problems getting bids ? I *don't think* I'll be around for longer than the 4 years... but you never know. Thanks for the good wishes !

I like the description of the first dress personally, and as long as a bra strap isnt sticking out I dont have a problem with spagetti straps on a nice dress.

first dress definitely. ditto on the bra strap no no. the pink dress sounds like an afternoon social, not evening -- though it sounds lovely.
good good luck and have a ball.
and keep us posted.

Congratulations on making "family history." Your family must be very proud of your drive and determination. I hope you have a great college experience and a wonderful Rush! You have a wide selection. I really hope you find your home

CALGrl, you should not have too many problems based on class standing. Are you a transfer? I've known quite a few juniors who have gone through rush at CAL and had a great experience.

Regarding pref, go with what makes you feel both comfortable and confident. I'd bring all three choices and see how you feel about them when rush rolls around.

Good luck and keep us posted.

LD

PS: Don't worry too much about the recs. They are NOT that big of a deal at CAL.

The first dress sounds almost exactly like what I wore for Pref -- and I got compliments at all three of the houses I was preffing at. So I'd vote for that one.
