Fall rush at Mizzou as a transfer?

Hi everyone,
I'm transferring to Mizzou next fall, after a not-so-great freshman year at a large, private east coast school. I've always planned on rushing and hopefully joining a sorority in college, but I don't know much about Mizzou's greek system. Is it common for a sophomore to get a bid? Any other insight anyone can offer is greatly appreciated also!!

Thanks =)

I did a search and found this thread about Mizzou rush:

http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...ghlight=mizzou

From what I know of it, it is competitive and recommendations are important to have, as alot of the freshmen will have them.

In addition, Mizzou will be adding a new sorority this fall (Sigma Sigma Sigma) and that's worth checking out since they will be looking to take on members that are in different years of school.

By "not so great" freshman year, are you talking about your GPA?

Yeah, grades are VERY important. At a school like Mizzou, I'm willing to bet that girls not meeting the minimum GPA are released after the first day.

No, my grades were very good around a 3.7 GPA in college and I had over a 4.0 in HS and I am involved and won a very prestigious academic award at my current school. It just wasn't great because I'm a midwestern girl and I had a hard time adjusting to the east coast attitude that is so prevalent at my school.

I really appreciate all the advice, I only know one girl who goes to Mizzou and she's not greek so this really helps!

Definitely get recommendations. A rec must be written by a member of the sorority to which the rec is being sent, so that's women from 13 sororities you need to find. SOME sororities allow collegiate members to write recs (they must be from another chapter than the one at your school), but ALL of them allow alumnae from any chapter to write recs.

You may have friends in sororities at your old college or friends with whom you went to high school who joined sororities. If there is a chapter of a friend's sorority at Mizzou (and they allow collegiate members to write recs), ask her if she would be willing to write you a rec. Ask high school teachers, sponsors of any activities/sports you participated in during HS, friends of your mother/sister, women you know from a place of worship, etc. Often, when you find one sorority woman (even if there is not a chapter of her sorority at Mizzou), she may be able to point you in the direction of others.

Recs from women you know personally are best, but it may not be possible to find a woman you know personally from all 13. Once you've exhausted all of your personal contacts, contact the Alumnae Panhellenic in the city nearest your hometown.

Good luck to you!

Are you not a Missouri girl? If you are from out of state, I would definitely work on getting your recs and letters lined up.

I transferred to Mizzou from a West Coast school, where I was a DG. Greek Town at Mizzou is amazing! Very traditional. I had two roommates who were sophomores and both did well in rush. Neither had great grades, so they got some of the houses that put a big emphasis on grades, but both ended up getting houses they liked. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

HOORAAAAY! Welcome to Mizzou! Couldn't tell ya much about sorority rush except that it involves a LOT of girls and seems to involve about half the population of Missouri... I have a friend that is in a sorority though that said that her recommendations were important, BUT the most important thing is how you carry yourself, poise, charm, etc. Think like you're in a Gala function when you mingle with the girls... cheesy laugh and all, be yourself but put your best foot out

Also, Beware the Journalism School students, they will eat you alive.
GOOD LUCK!

It's great that you feel you can give advice about sorority rush, but you're a GUY (and not even in fraternity or anything).

Hi, I'm a sorority member at Mizzou and I'd be glad to answer any questions you have about Mizzou recruitment! While it is pretty big, I wouldn't say it's necessarily as intense as everybody is saying it is. I'm from a northern state and I came to Mizzou knowing no one and with zero rec letters and still ended up in a "top" house! And this is not an uncommon occurrance. Grades are a HUGE factor and yes, girls do get released very early on based on grades (it's rumored that one house releases ONLY on grades the first day) but since your grades were excellent, you will be just fine! I know sophomores who got bids to every house, so seriously no worries there! Tri-Sigma will be colonizing on campus in the fall so no other chapter will be allowed to COB for quite some time, so formal rush is your only bet if you want to be in an established house. And it's true that housing is a huge issue for Tri-Sigma- there are several homeless fraternities at this point and they've had no luck finding anywhere to live in Greektown. I've heard that until that issue is worked out, Tri-Sigma will occupy a floor or wing of a residence hall. While we're expecting about 1,300-1,400 girls to come through recruitment, Panhellenic quota has been about 75 (with some houses allowed to take more than quota because so many girls suicided), and house total at about 217, I believe. Any other questions, feel free to ask!

Oh, and as for the comment about the Journalism kids- so not true! I'm one of them and I'm definitely not that intense!

Lastly, WELCOME TO MIZZOU!!!! You're gonna love it
