Spring O8 Recruitment! Yay!
Ok, so I'm not sure exactly how to do this, but I went through formal recruitment at a school I just transferred to this spring semester. So going into rush I knew no one, and I was pretty worried about that, especially since I was an upperclassman (sophomore). Anyway, the good thing about all of this was that I went in without knowing much about the school reputations of the sororities.
So anyway, rush started about a week after I arrived at the school. And I'll name the sororities after fruits because I'm sick right now and really not feeling creative. I'm going to name them in the order I visited them on the first day.
Orange- These girls were really nice, but they were the one group I had heard about from several people, and I wasn't so sure I liked what I had heard but I tried to go in with an open mind. I liked the girls I talked to, but I noticed they all looked the same, and it wasn't like me. I had good conversations with the girls, and it was the first house I'd been into so I didn't have anything to judge them against.
Apple- I knew from the moment I walked into this house that I didn't like it. Without a doubt the girls were all the same, and they weren't looking for anyone that wasn't like them, and I definitely wasn't like them. I had awful conversations with the girls and couldn't wait for this round to end.
Banana- I liked this house and had good conversations with the girls. It was a smaller sorority, but they were really laid back and easy to talk to. I especially hit it off with one girl I talked to. The only thing that struck me as a little bit odd about this house was that they were all asking the same question and they would interrupt what I was saying, it seemed, just to get through their list and that disappointed me a little, but overall I really liked the house.
Grape- I liked this house a lot when I went in and started talking to the girls. The girls were all really nice and easy to talk to and we seemed to have a lot in common. I don't remember any specifics about this house, but at the time I really really really liked it, and later that day I heard it was one of the popular ones that every girl wanted to be a part of.
Strawberry- I like this house a lot too. I had heard throughout the day that this was also a house that everyone liked a lot. I was a little intimidated by this house because it was really crowded. All the girls were really sweet and all of the girls I talked to were different, but I seemed to have something in common with each one. I was pretty intimidated by this house though because all the girls were really pretty and really social.
Peach- I also liked this house a lot. The house seemed very warm to me, all the girls were really cheerful and easy to talk to. However, I was a little worried that not all the girls I talked to were genuine, but they were all still nice and I didn't let that bother me because I knew it was the first day and that the point of the first day was to generally make a good impression both for the rushees and the rushers. Every girl in this sorority was also gorgeous.
Lemon- (The name of this sorority doesn't mean anything, so don't associate it with sour, it was just one of the last fruit names I could think of). I really liked this sorority, I actually knew one of the girls in there and everyone was really nice and really easy to talk to. The conversations I had were good and the house felt really comfortable. Some of the girls were a little awkward, but it comforted me because I was probably a little awkward to, so all in all I really enjoyed this house.
Watermelon- I also enjoyed this house. I remember noticing that almost everyone looked the same, but then I noticed that there were also some girls that didn't fit the norm. I wasn't completely sure that I would fit in at this sorority but the one girl I ended up talking to for the longest amount of time and I really hit it off and had a lot to talk about. The conversation flowed naturally, so I left the house really liking it. I was also really glad the day was over.
At the end of the day we didn't have to rank the houses, but we picked 6 that we liked and drop 2.
The 2 I dropped were Orange and Apple.

I believe I know the school you are attending, and I'm laughing at the "all the girls looked the same" comment. This school's greek system is very divided - everyone gets along, but you can usually tell where a PNM is going from day 1. There is just a "type" of girl that goes XYZ, etc. Can't wait to hear the rest of your story!!

Ok, so the next day, Philanthropy day, I got asked back to the 6 houses that I wanted to get asked back to. I was pretty excited since I knew I was probably at a disadvantage being an upperclassman and a transfer. So here are the houses I went back to...
Banana- I really liked this house's philanthropy and really liked that all of the girls I talked to knew a lot about it. I really clicked with some of the girls I talked to in the house, but others I had a harder time talking to. Overall, though, I liked this house a lot and felt like I could see myself there in the future.
Grape- I also really liked this house a lot. They had a really cute craft and this was the first house where one of my conversations went completely off topic and we seemed to have a lot to talk about. I clicked with another girl because of where I'm from and so that also gave us a lot to talk about, so overall I thought I clicked with these girls really well and had a lot to talk about. I was pretty excited about this house.
Strawberry- I liked this house too. I liked their philanthropy, and I also liked that the girls were fun to talk to. Everyone in this house seemed really enthusiastic. I don't remember many of the specific conversations I had here, but the conversations came smoothly and I really liked this house when I left and definitely wanted to be asked back there again, but I wasn't sure that would happen because it was so popular.
Peach- The craft in this house was really cute, and once again the house felt warm and cozy. I really liked the girls I talked to and for the most part we had a lot to talk about. I thought I clicked with these girls really well and I was really getting involved in all of the conversations I was having. I didn't get much of my craft done in this house, probably from talking so much, but I still had a really good time.
Lemon- The craft in this house was my favorite. Unfortunately though, the first couple of girls I talked to in this house didn't seem to be that interested in what I had to say. Both of the girls kept looking away as if they weren't interested in what I had to say. This kind of sucked for me because going into rush I really thought I'd be interested in this house. The last person I talked to in the house was my friend, so that was nice, and of course I really enjoyed talking to her.
Watermelon- I talked to a couple of really nice girls in the house, but I felt like it was hard for me to keep the conversations going. The girls were all nice, and all involved in their sorority, but it didn't seem like I had as much in common with these girls as I wanted to. I really liked the house's philanthropy though, so I didn't want to rule them out completely.
Again that night we had to drop 2, so I dropped Watermelon and Lemon.

Skit night
So after waiting for too long, we finally found out where we would be going back to for skit night, which we could attend up to 4 parties. I got cut from one of the houses I originally thought I really wanted, but throughout the few days that we didn't have recruitment activities I saw girls around campus from this sorority and realized that maybe outside of their house, I didn't fit in with them. They were a lot different than I thought they were, and in the end, it worked out and didn't bother me much that they dropped me.
I got asked back to and went back to:
Banana- This house had a great skit. It was really cute and all the girls had so much fun while they were performing it. All the girls I talked to were really sweet and easy to talk to, but I knew I had to really decide which house I could see myself in, and I saw a girl that I had talked to before and I waved, but she didn't seem to recognize me, which really hurt the sorority for me. (On her defense, I know you meet a lot of people, but she and I were from the same hometown, which was rare, so I thought I would stand out.)
Strawberry- This house was the last one I went to that night. To be honest, it intimidated me but also made me really want to be a part of their sorority. It was the 4th round of the night and the girls sang really enthusiastically, even the girls who weren't in the skits were really involved and not to mention the skit was amazing. Then as I was talking to girls that evening, conversation still flowed well and all of the girls I talked to were really nice and for the most part we had something in common. I liked this house a lot, but I wasn't getting emotionally attached to any of them yet.
Peach- This house also had amazing skits, and all of the songs were really cute and I got really into the skit at one point. One girl I talked to didn't really click with me, but I guess that's to be expected, you can't click with everyone. I clicked well with the other girls which made up for it. I still really enjoyed this house, and I also knew one of the girls from my first week at the school, and she saw me and waved. That night I guess it's safe to say that I based some of my opinions of the sororities on the personal relationships that I had begun to make through the process. This house was definitely one I wanted to keep on my list.
Lemon- This house was the first I went to of the night. I honestly got goosebumps at the skits, but I couldn't decide if it was because it was cold outside, or because I was really let down by the house the night before and now they had come back and really impressed me with the skit. However, the girls I talked to, again, were a little awkward and didn't seem as interested in me. But I saw a few girls I had talked to before and they all smiled and me and waved, and I really appreciated that. Overall I enjoyed this house a lot.
However, that night, we could only keep 2. It was a hard decision, but I honestly thought that night that I'd be happy at any of the 4 I got asked back to. So, trying to be slick, I cut the two that weren't as selective and kept the other 2 because I knew basically that if I got cut from the more selective ones, I would at worst have to go back to the less selective, and in my case, I would be ok with that because I honestly liked them all and I knew my chances as an upperclassmen weren't great for staying at both of the more selective houses. I'm basically trying not to sound like a jerk, but my strategy was fairly effective. That night I dropped Lemon and Banana.
What do you think will happen next?!?!

Pref night
Sorry to take so long, I've had a long hard week of school.
But anyway, I got asked back to Strawberry and Lemon! I thought that I would be upset about losing Peach, but for some reason I wasn't, I think that night before I had thought about it and Strawberry and Lemon were really where I fit in the best, so it looked like the process had been working for me. [:
Strawberry- This house was AMAZING. The ceremony was really beautiful. I was met at the door by my suitemate, who I really liked a lot. The ceremony took place, I almost found myself crying, even though I told myself I'd never do that. My suitemate told me she'd wanted to pref me, but that one of the girls that was doing the ceremony (who waved at me when I came in) really wanted to, so she was the one I talked to that night. She was so nice, and so cute. I hadn't gotten emotionally attached to a house before, but I couldn't help it this time. I was in love, and worried, as an upperclassman.
Lemon- I really thought my friend would have preffed me in this house, but I was surprised to see that another girl that I talked to had preffed me. I was excited, the house was ADORABLE. They had personalized a lot of little desserts for us, and it was really cute. The ceremony wasn't as heartfelt as Strawberry's, but it was still special to the girls. The only bad part was, the whole time I was here, I kept thinking about how amazing Strawberry had been. But thinking about it later I realized I could really be happy at this house. The girls were all really nice and they all were really happy to have all of us there.
So that night, I made the easiest decision for me yet. I had been indecisive every other night, but that night I preffed Strawberry, but still was hoping that I could be happy at either house I got a bid from.
The next day I was so anxious all day! All the upperclassmen had to meet in the student center because we didn't have the same dorm so it was easier to all meet there. I FINALLY got my turn to get my envelope.
I am now extremely happy to be a part of:
STRAWBERRY!!!
also known as................
KAPPA ALPHA THETA! [:
I'm so happy! I didn't know if this was supposed to be two separate posts, but I could wait anymore!
