My 2007 Rush

I am at my new university, 18 years old, and am going to go through recruitment after much debating and arguing with myself over this decision mainly because i have fears regarding recruitment and sororities but I do want this so i am willing to give it a try.

Information night is next week and recruitment starts the following week. I am nervous and excited at the same time. I have been reading about recs and all sorts of things like that but at my campus, it is very laidback and casual and not competitive at all so i have decided to not get recs. I hope this decision doesnt hurt me later.

There are 4 sororities on my campus. I have met girls from 3 of the sororities but i am hoping to run into girls from the last one. They all seem so nice and friendly.

I will update when everything starts. I am excited and nervous!

Thank you. I am excited at the idea of what may happen but also nervous about the bad stuff like getting dropped. I try not to think negatively but i cant help it right now.

I just saw 2 girls from one of the sororities wearing really pretty blue shirts with their letters on them in yellow. They carried matching bags with their letters.

I know what you mean, my school doesn't have a very competitive rush and I'm pretty afraid about that too! Is your school's recruitment very competitive?

Good luck to you!!

Everyone has given great advice, but I'll chime in. Don't preoccupy yourself with worrying about being "dropped". This time is all about you and what you think works best for you. The way I look at it is your "job" during recruitment is to find out a) if the obligations of Greek Life are of interest to you and something you support b) discover whether you feel comfortable with a chapter and make decisions what your heart tells you and finally c) take this opportunity to get to know all these women that are now your classmates and to get to know your campus.

I'm not questioning your commitment to be Greek but I've seen too many chapters that have issues filling their house because too many women pledged thinking it was "cool" but didn't understand the financial or academic obligations and then deactivated. It should be your Panhellenic and the chapter's responsibilities to educate you and your fellow new members on Greek Life but don't be afraid to ask questions either! (I'm not bashing on greek life at all but I worry that sometimes it becomes a numbers game and we don't live in a perfect world either)

Your college experience will be what you make of it if you are Greek and the same holds true for students that are not. (Now this is the Student Affairs person in me talking!! )

Good luck to you during recruitment. Make sure to ask lots of good questions, show your interest (usually by asking the questions and demonstrating genuine excitement about being at the parties), and remember to relax and have fun!!

That's the best wish anyone could give a PNM!

I have signed up for recruitment and am really excited. I did make a dumb mistake that I guess anyone with little knowledge of sorority life can make. I know there are 4 sororities on my campus. Last week, I saw two girls wearing shirts that had the letters PX on them. They said hello to me and I started talking to them and then asked them what sorority they were in because I was not familiar with PX sorority and I never saw them listed on the school Greek Life website.
They didn't laugh at me but were very nice in explaining about recruitment counselors and what the do. They assured me that all this would be explained during Information Night which is this week on Thursday. I was so embarassed and I feel so stupid now.
I hope to get beyond this and am ready because Day 1 is on Friday of this week!

Also, I am starting to feel some stress over this. My roommate is a legacy to one of the houses and our other friend and her roommate all have ties to some of the chapters because of relatives and friends they have there. I'm the only one that doesn't know anyone since I'm not from the area.

Recruitment is not competitive at all at my school. It is very relaxed (from what I've been told).

Oh goodness, no need to feel stupid.

I've had PNMs ask me this all the time at info night before they have their orientation because they don't know what it is.
