My mother always said.. Don't say anything you wouldn't want to broadcast to the whole world or printed in the newspaper. Now I understand why...

Undoubtably, someone has posted that she is a Delta Gamma from Alpha Nu-Southern California. I read somewhere that she does not control the mic.. the audio person does. I am sure someone in the media on CG can confirm???

Not in the media, but from what I understand you are supposed to a) always treat mikes like they're live (doesn't happen much) and b) turn it off, or leave it behind. It sounded like it was on her jacket which she takes off in the restroom and puts back on again. But not only did she oops, the audio tech should have caught it immediately as well.

The part about the audio person controlling the mic is correct.
One of the earliest things you should be taught in Radio-TV or J-School, though, is to ALWAYS assume the microphone is on and don't say anything stupid when one is even in the same room.

That's my experience. I wasn't exactly on CNN, but rather a college TV newscast, but we never made any noise when it wasn't our turn to read. You can never place 100% faith in those sound guys.
Of course, on CNN, this wasn't exactly a 90 second package from what I can tell. They were feeding live video, which played for several minutes. The sound operator just goofed. People make mistakes.

Ask President Bush (and a few other select politicians) about making comments when an open microphone was close by.
It's happened to "W" at least twice in my memory -- and he's certainly not alone.

That's what we were taught, and it went for news conferences/news calls as well. Assume that you are audible, and you won't make a mistake or say something stupid.
