NPC/AES Members that are Defunct

I am curious about a few defunct NPC and AES members.

I know that Beta Gamma was founded at the University of Colorado but I have no clue when. Actually, all I know is where it was founded. Does anyone know who absorbed them?

I have down the following defunct/absorbed previous NPC members or associate members:

Alpha Delta Theta ab. by Phi Mu in 1939.
Beta Sigma Omicron ab. by ZTA in 1964.
Beta Phi Alpha ab. by DZ in 1941.
Theta Upsilon ab. by DZ in 1962.
Iota Alpha Pi which dissolved in 1971.
Lambda Omega, an associate member that was ab. by Theta Upsilon in 1932.
Phi Omega Pi which was ab. by DZ in 1946.
Sigma Phi Beta ab. by Phi Omega Pi in 1933 and was an associate member of the NPC in 1933.
Delta Sigma Epsilon ab. by DZ in 1956.

And than there are the AES members.
Theta Sigma Upsilon ab. by AGD in 1959.
Pi Delta Theta ab. Delta Sigma Epsilon in 1940.
Pi Kappa Sigma ab. Sigma Kappa in 1959.
the illusive Beta Gamma??

And than there are some other sororities that I think may or may not have been NPC or AES members and I would love some assistance with them as well.

Alpha Kappa Psi. All I know is that they were founded March 1, 1900 at St. Mary's School and dissolved in 1915. Their publication was called The Trigonon and it was a secret publication.

Eta Upsilon Gamma which was founded Nov. 1901 at Christian College. Their motto was "Be Strong in the Truth" and their publication was The Adamas (1909).

Sigma Iota Chi which was founded Dec. 1903 in Alexandria, La by two alums of St. James and St. Xavier's and was absorbed in 1915...

And finally Phi Mu Gamma which was founded Oct. 17, 1898 at Hollins College and was absorbed in 1915. This sorority eventually became a high school sorority and honorably dismissed all the college chapters.

I have read the other threads about absorbed/defunct NPC's but I am more curious about the ones above that are not mentioned.I believe the few above were NPC's because they were mentioned in a book by Sarah Ida Shaw as Junior NPC members...

You would probably enjoy browsing through a copy of Baird's Manual of College Fraternities.

Beta Gamma was a fraternity at Colorado founded in 1924 and became a Theta Xi chapter in 1929.

You might be interested in my thread that lists every chapter of every NPC ever. It doesn't include AES sororities that never joined the NPC, however. It does include NPCs that no longer exist, and shows who absorbed them.

Might some of the current NPC chapters at Rider University be former chapters of the Junior Panhellenic sororities? Both Alpha Xi Delta and ZTA came on campus in 1967. The Rider Greek life website says Alpha Xi Delta was formerly known as Sigma Iota Chi and ZTA was formerly known as Eta Upsilon Gamma.

Xidelt-- That seems interesting. So ZTA use to be Eta Upsilon Gamma? Or is it the other way around? Or were these chapters that became chapters of ZTA?

I have looked through the Baird's that are available on Google books...so like the 1920s edition. Ha. I also check www.fratpin.com a lot to see if they find any badges from these defunct NPC or AES members and they often do.

But Beta Gamma is the one that seems to have no information for the modern-day seeker since they might have been absorbed or closed before any thing was written...

I don't think that all of the eta upsilon gamma chapters became chapters of ZTA. I think it might just be the chapter at Rider. If the entire sorority was absorbed by ZTA, I'm sure it would easy to locate that info on a ZTA history website. Just pure speculation as I'm not a member of an NPC. Perhaps the two chapters at Rider became locals after their national headquarters folded and then later affiliated with ZTA and AXiD.

The only absorption that ZTA was involved in that I an aware of is that of Beta Sigma Omicron. Not all BSO chapters were absorbed.

Perhaps as Xidelt suggested the Rider chapter of Eta Upsilon Gamma was the only one absorbed by ZTA.

My cousin was a Teke at Rider in the 1960's and his wife was a member of Sigma Iota Chi. She told me that she believed that Sigma was always a local. Twenty years later, their daughter was a ZTA also at Rider.

Rider has a picture of the Sigma house: http://cdm15457.contentdm.oclc.org/c...457coll3/id/20. It's a good hike from campus.

Rider was a two year institution until the mid 1950s & had chapters of three junior college sororities, As those organizations began to disintegrate nationally during the late 1930s & 1940s their chapters began to operate as locals...some changing to new names and others, like Rider, retained the original names. In 1967 the Sigma Iota Chi group joined Alpha Xi Delta, Zeta Mu Epsilon joined Delta Zeta & Eta Upsilon Gamma joined Zeta Tau Alpha. Also interesting, Iota Alpha Pi (a now defunct sorority) which competed with NPC groups at most institutions, installed a chapter at Rider in 1947 while it was still two year. It left the national organization and became local in 1955 and in 1962 became a chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon. All of the above NPCs except DZ are still active today.

Some more information:

Beta Sigma Omicron was absorbed by Zeta Tau Alpha except for 3 chapters which were released to Alpha Phi.

The Delta Tau chapter of Alpha Phi at Louisiana State University was formerly a chapter of Beta Sigma Omicron present from 1929-1964 then the LSU chapter was released to Alpha Phi in 1965 and the chapter closed in 1980. However, this Fall of 2013, our Delta Tau chapter is being recolonized at LSU.

The Delta Upsilon chapter of Alpha Phi at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio was formerly a chapter of Beta Sigma Omicron present from ?-1964 then the BWC chapter was released to Alpha Phi in 1965 and the chapter is still present today.

The Delta Phi chapter of Alpha Phi at Indiana University of Pennsylvania was formerly a chapter of Beta Sigma Omicron present from ?-1965 then the IUP chapter was released to Alpha Phi in 1965 and the chapter closed in 1988.

I have found some listings of other Junior Sororities.

Alpha Kappa Psi
Eta Gamma Upsilon
Sigma Iota Chi
Phi Mu Gamma
Zeta Mu Epsilon
Theta Tau Epsilon

It is difficult to find any information on Alpha Kappa Psi since a large National Fraternity has the same name...And Phi Mu Gamma searches always end up with Phi Mu, Gamma chapter results.
The only information I have on Theta Tau Epsilon was that it was founded at Stephens' College in 1921 as well as another Junior Sorority, Kappa Delta Phi.

Beta Gamma sorority, which was said to be an AES member is so difficult to get any information on! All I know is that it is listed on Wikipedia and it says it was founded at University of Colorado. Does anyone have any information on Beta Gamma?

I also found this interesting Tumblr that might interest some of those who are responding to this thread. It is about defunct NPC and AES members! http://defunctsorority.tumblr.com/

Update: I bought the 1936 Adamas on Ebay (Eta Gamma Upsilon's magazine) and it listed sororities under a "National Junior College Panhellenic". This gave the founding date of each and their magazine name.

Eta Gamma Upsilon called themselves "Gammas" or "EUG"...contrary to what we use, HUG.

So Theta Tau Epsilon's magazine was The Kite and Kappa Delta Phi's was The Torch...that is all I have found on these two so far. I have a 1968 copy of Baird's and neither are in there...

Hello all! I thought I might share with you all my research. I started a blog and I have been posting info. about Defunct AES, NPC, junior college sororities, and about the sororities at my alma mater.

http://sororityhistories.wordpress.com/

If you are interested in some other sorority let me know and I will research what I can and post about it.

Somewhere on here you mentioned "Theta Upsilon Gamma", which did not exist. Rather, it is a typo in some sorority literature of ETA Upsilon Gamma- a national 2-year sorority, as you already know!
