The Atlanta paper covered the story but left out the group's name, I think.
What a strange deal. It seems like it would have been worth it for everyone to keep it from making the news.

Why? Why should the victim be worried about making the news?

They were even talking about this on the sports radio station this afternoon. Didn't mention the sorority name.

To avoid having your name associated with a paragraph like this in the Washington Post:
"The daughter of University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban is being sued by a sorority sister who claims the two got into a fight over a Facebook post after a night of drinking."
Even if you end up with greater injuries, I'm not sure "got into a fight over a Facebook post after a night of drinking" makes is seem that you are blameless victim, and the response might likely be your name being dragged thorough the mud too.
I suppose what I was really thinking is that it would have been worth it for Nick Saban to have ponied up the money to have settled before this generated any publicity. But I guess if he thinks his daughter is the blameless one [ETA: okay, not blameless but not actually liable], he'd just be inviting other people to sue him or his family.
I suppose the reluctance to file criminal charges at the time triggered me to assume that "the victim" didn't completely want things splashed all over the press.
ETA: But you are completely right that victims of assault shouldn't be ashamed of seeking redress.

I can't be the only one who thinks this is really dumb.

I'd assume at the time she didn't think it was a good idea to press charges against a sister and the daughter of the most popular coach on campus. It may have had nothing to do with not wanting publicity or anything else. I'm sure time has just made her more not less pissed given the things mentioned in the filing.

Yeah, and assuming that her claims are true with the actual ongoing suffering she's experienced, it seems clearer that collecting damages would worth any potential embarrassment from publicity.
And you'd probably get over any embarrassment once everyone you knew in real life knew anyway.
I wonder if she can still press criminal charges.

For the record, Miss Saban is no longer a Phi Mu.

To be honest, 10K seems really low, considering the damages she's describing. It also seems strange to me that the defendent's family wouldn't pay 10K to keep it quiet.

I agree on both points. I wonder if, since it kind of says we're suing for at least 10,000, that amount is some kind of threshold in how she filed the suit, but they really expect more than that?

I was wondering about that considering it said in the article somewhere that they USED to be sorority sisters. I was hoping that the victim hadn't been kicked out of the chapter. What a sordid story, but collegiates do stupid things and emotional/mental issues and drinking problems occur in families of famous people, too.
