Unhappy THIRD times a charm?

During informal recruitment I only attended one houses party out of four and did not receive a bid. I just finished formal recruitment about a month ago and the night before pref. I had been invited back to three out of four houses, but pref. night I received no invites. I really would like to join so that I can have a more positive college experience but I'm afraid to rush again because it feels like my chances are very low. Has anyone else gone through three times or have any of you members seen girls rush three times? What are your thoughts?

I'm sorry that things aren't working out.

Whether you should rush again is up to you.

My biggest advice would be to consider your school. Is it competitive? Do very many girls re-rush and have success? Do chapters favor freshmen?

Also, consider YOU. Ask yourself: "What is going to be different next time that will make sororities interested in taking a 2nd look at me?"

For example: Did you have a low GPA or something? Going through with the same grades isn't going to yield a different result. Were you shy? Going through and not improving your conversation skills isn't going to make things any different. Something has to be different.

Another thing: You CAN have a great college experience without being Greek. If you hold Greek Life to be the ONLY way to have a good college experience, you'll never be satisfied.

Thanks! I know the first time I was shy, but the second time I did really well, there were no awkward pauses in conversation and my gpa is 3.3. The girls in my top choice seemed interrested in me so I thought that I would at least get invited back to pref. night. I really would like to be apart of it all.

I understand wanting to be part of it, but unfortunately they may not be interested in you.

I mean, if other chapters are holding informal, by all means go. Just be aware that if a chapter cut you during formal, they may not extend you a bid.

I got a bid from my favorite house after the third time I went through recruitment (2 formal and 1 informal).

The first two times I went through the process I was terrified and it showed. I'm a very outgoing person who was overwhelmed by everything. Then I went through informal rush and was able to show the sisters who I truly was.

If you can handle the rejection, you have nothing to lose by trying one more time. Just focus on what you didn't do great in the past and aim to improve it.

And feel free to PM me if you have any more questions!

Try to be critical of yourself to figure out what may have gone wrong. Are you active on campus? Do you know anyone in the Greek community? Was your appearance up to par with the other PNMs around you? I think that rushing the third time is a difficult proposition. For every great outcome like the one TriDLove had, there is a lot of heartache. Think about what conversations you had during recruitment. There were no awkward pauses, but what did you actually talk about? There has to be a reason why you would have been released prior to preference round twice. I know that is hard to hear, but if you don't try to identify this issue and correct it, a third attempt will likely end the same way as the first two.

It's like when I tried out for cheerleader in middle school. I didn't get picked in 6th or 7th grade. I was one of only two girls not picked in the 6th grade, and the only girl not picked in the 7th grade. Yeah, it sucked. I really wanted to be a cheerleader, though. So, I listened to advice. Realized that I really did do somethings wrong, like making faces walking away from the court during my try-out. I also didn't know how to do a cartwheel. Before I tried out in 8th grade, I learned how to do some tricks, I got some confidence so that I wouldn't act embarrassed walking off the court, and I worked with the cheerleading coach on some new cheers. I made the team that year and had a great time! No one believes I was a cheerleader now days...I don't seem the type, but I loved it!

It sounds like you really want this to happen, but a third attempt is also burdened by the fact that you are farther from Freshman status, as well. I wish you luck, but I hope you go into it with a plan.

Thank you! I just knew from their first datebook the first time I went through recruitment that I loved Tri Delta. I think that all the girls that say "no! Don't go through recruitment more than once!" need to understand that not everyone makes a fantastic first impression.

It's understandable that if you go to a school with a very competitive greek system that you may not have any chance. But what do you really have to lose?

If you can mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of not getting a bid, try it once more (: Who knows, maybe you'll end up in your dream house too!
