tranferring +frat

alright so i just finished my first yeear and it sucked at my school, im a very outgoing person but the campus housing SUCKS( 3 rooms on one floor 13 stories up made it IMPOSSIBLE to meet new people) reason i left was it was WAY to hard to meet people, and i joined groups etc, i know when your not wanted, i have plenty of friends everywhere else, whether its from home or baseball camp in florida...


heres the dillemma, if i transfer to one state school, ill get housing and will probably pledge if i get a bid......and with the good housing itll be easy to meet people i live w. on my flooor, etc..

However, the other school, SCHOOL B is about 2x the size ( i prefer bigger schools), my major is ranked much higher, campus is slightly nicer, and better weather, better area, and better campus.. but I WONT get dorm housing, ill be in an apartment complex close to campus, so meeting new people will be a bitch..


Will joining a frat make things much easier in terms of meeting friends if i choose to live off campus at school B since i like that school better? Reason im saying this is as an off campus transfer in a new environment and ido nt wanna be stuck with zero friends at a uge school, ive already been there once...

it sounds like you want to join a fraternity, or at least rush one, in order to make friends?

at least one GDI has his head on straight around here!

I rushed as a transfer student with the goal of meeting people and making friends. Hopefully you'll be sold on the idea of fraternity and the responsibilities and benefits that are included, but to put it to you simply:

rushing = meeting lots of people

so it will be a good opportunity to get your neck out there....especially if you live off campus.

Is it normal at either school for 2nd years to live on campus? Every school is different, but some are more commuter than others. It would suck to go to the smaller school only to realize realtively few people stay on campus.

Besides the possiblity of going greek, what other organizations or activities would interest you at either school? It seems like you really would prefer the bigger school but don't want to be lost in the crowd. You have a completely valid concern but I think you should focus on the bigger picture. Not just education, not just social. Which school can help you "grow"?

It's kind of funny; I was talking to someone today about writing style, and you provided a great example of how a post can be casual about grammar and informal but still communicate what you want it to. I also like your positive attitude.

Personally, I'm kind of nerd and I've been out of school a really long time , so I feel obligated to say that you should consider the stronger academics of school B.

SoCalGirl also has an excellent point about how the campus culture really affects how you should view the housing issue. It's also true that at some schools only first year students and kids with housing scholarships stay in the dorm after freshman year. What do you know about the campus life of the two schools with stuff like that? I think your instinct to be on campus is correct, but I don't know if it's worth sacrificing the other things you are looking for.
Will you have roommates that you already know at the apartment because even that can make it easier?

I think that going through rush and joining a group does help you meet people, but even that varies a lot from place to place. Some schools have really casual and open systems with a lot of strong groups that are relatively easy to join, and other schools have a lot of groups that fancy themselves really exclusive and it can be hard for a person who doesn't already know people in the groups to join. It just depends on the campus.

If the two schools are in state, you can probably find out from other people who go there what the Greek systems are like at both places, so you could compare that aspect more directly.

If you want to say more about your situation on here, people from your state will help you, but it gets weird sometimes if people know too much about your real life situation. What you ask or talk about can get back to people on your campus, believe it or not.

It might be worth it to see if either school has private "dorms" nearby. They're technically considered off-campus housing, but only university students live there. You wouldn't be living on campus, but you'd still get the same experience of living on a hall and stuff.

Either way, I definitely think you should go through rush.

As far as school B, it depends on the kind of apartments you'll be in. Some complexes are all students (and a few townies who are nuts) and it's easier to meet new people than you'd think. They're usually called "University Manor" or something along those lines. The situation I would steer clear of if you're afraid of isolation is living in an apartment that's part of someone's house or something like that.

ok thanks for the help, in terms of size on school is 15,000 while the othere is 27,000, but the actual campus is 2x and there's more to do at school B. Off campus WOULD be university owned apartments where only oter studnets (transfer too) would be living. Their both big state schools meaning not many commuters.

School size should not really be that big of a deal. 15,000 is not a bad size school and while you like a bigger school idea can be good or bad. More to do in a bigger town, but still more people to get to know!

Joining a GLO is always a benefit. Just try and make sure you check all of them out. Don't just listen to what others say! When you find the right one for you, you will know. Remember, it is not just a 4-5 year commitment but can be forever. The Friends you make will not be in just one GLO, but many. We as GLOs work together in many ways as you will learn.
