A&M Chapter House

Posted on Zeta's website:

ZTA moves its Texas A&M chapter due to house safety concerns

February 25, 2008

Zeta Tau Alpha’s Fraternity Housing Corporation has moved the residents of its Theta Gamma Chapter House at Texas A&M University in College Station to temporary housing while it addresses structural concerns about the facility.
“Our number one priority has always been the safety and security of our members who live and meet in our housing facilities,” said Corporation President Julia Marthaler Hill. “Based on expert opinion, we have concerns about the structural integrity of the facility, so we have taken steps to be sure that our members have a safe place to live for the rest of the school year.

“We regret that we have inconvenienced our members in this way. We have met with the resident and non-resident members of this outstanding chapter and have assured them that we will do everything within our power to keep them safe and provide them with housing and meeting facilities”

The Theta Gamma Chapter house, located at 1403 Athens Drive, was built in 1982 and is owned by the ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation.

For the remainder of the school year, ZTA members who lived in the chapter house will be housed off-campus at the NHC’s expense. The chapter will hold its meetings and activities on campus.

The Fraternity and the NHC thank the members of Theta Gamma Chapter, their parents and the Department of Greek Life at Texas A&M for their cooperation and understanding.

More news

From the Greek Life office at A&M:

"ATTENTION: Aggie Greek Presidents, Advisors, House Corporation Presidents

To the Aggie Greek Community~

Today, we learned that Zeta Tau Alpha's National Housing Corporation has made the decision to immediately move the occupants of their house to temporary housing for the rest of the semester. While addressing some ordinary housing concerns raised by residents, engineering contractors and other experts working with Zeta's NHC made the determination that there was cause for concern about the structural integrity of the facility.

Putting the safety of the residents and non-resident members of Zeta's chapter is their primary objective and in doing so they made a difficult decision to temporarily close the house until a decision regarding repairs can be made. The Department of Greek Life highly commends the international organization's prompt response to the issue and is working directly with them to address questions related to the relocation, meeting space, transportation, etc.

As many of you are aware, the property in and around sorority row has a history of instability and many of the facilities (both sorority and non-Greek residential) have struggled with foundation cracks, shifting, and other issues. Because of this history our local media has shown an interest in the story. They are running a brief story on the 6:00pm local news
(KBTX-TV) and are interested in similar concerns that may exist in the area.

Presidents, be aware that the media may be in and around the area searching for a quote or comment. I would encourage you to direct them to your chapter advisor or house corporation representative for a more accurate response.

If you are unsure of where to direct them feel free to direct them to me at 979-862-5636. Advisors you may want to put your House Corporation presidents in the loop on this so that any inquiries made by the media can be addressed as per your local and international organization's preferences.

Again, Zeta Tau Alpha should be applauded for their quick response to this challenge. Likewise, I would encourage each and everyone that owns or rents property for the purpose of fraternal housing or meeting space to review your housing risk management plans, inspection documents, and insurance coverage. This is a wonderful example of a pro-active risk management response to a situation that could have placed lives in danger.

I am asking all of you as members of the Aggie Greek community to offer your thoughts of support and generosity to the members of Zeta Tau Alpha as they work through this temporary dilemma. Should you have any questions regarding this situation please direct them to me or Nick Zuniga.

We wish the members of Texas Aggie chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha all the best."

delta delta delta at u of florida had to build a new house because their (now) old house had a sinkhole developing under it. they also had to move out of their old house before the new house was completed. it had no negative effect on their recruitment whatsoever. from what i understand the new house is unbelievable and is the envy of panhellenic drive.

hopefully our housing corporation will turn these lemons into lemonade for our texas a & m sisters.

thank you for the update aphi4ever.
