Smile Signs and Calls

Hello to the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and to all of the sistahfriends who post on this board. I want to ask the ladies of AKA a question.

Last nite, in the bookstore, I was skimming through the book The Divine Nine. I read a little bit of each section about the different fraternity and sorority organizations, then I came to the pictures. Has anyone else ever noticed that in pictures of "older chapters" from the 20's, 30's, 40's and so on, that they don't hold up signs? For instance, in the pictures of AKA I noticed that no one was holding up their pinky, or making the sign of the ivy and I was just wondering why. Did they used to do calls back then? I also noticed the same thing about the other organizations, not just the AKA's. If this information shouldn't be divulged to me, I apologize in advance for asking.

Thanks in advance for your reply...

No, it was not done then. I know some older sorors who do not use the call or sign.
