I'm assuming that she does nothing at the Miami campus that semester, but probably pays tuition to UM, and then leaves in March. The GL office can give you guidance on whether you'd be eligible for rush, because, with a six-week pledge period, it's possible that you'd be able to initiate before you leave.

Yes, exactly as DeltaBetaBaby stated. I don't do anything at the Miami campus, but I am a commuter and can go to any sorority meetings and be involved.

You give me hope! =) Thank you so much.

You should, however, also see if there is COB happening right now. I'll be honest: the strongest recruiting chapters are not likely to want to take someone in your position, so you will probably have limited options during formal recruitment anyway.

We have a half-semester study abroad program like this in my dept. During their teacher assisting semester, students in this program spend the first half in classes with the professors on campus, then they all go abroad together to teacher assist in classrooms and continue working with the same professors. This partnership in a certain country/with a sister university has been going on for at least 10 years. Not everyone does it...many students do a traditional placement locally. I agree with Titchou...study abroad has become quite common, and there are a wide variety of programs out there. We excuse this in the chapter I advise, and we have held later initiations at times for new members who had some unusual complication/conflict. I'd follow the advice of contacting the Greek Life office, but I think she should try to make it work.

Not doubting anything she has said, but...U of Miami has formal rush in January? Is that weird to anyone else other than me?

I think it is the only Florida school on a deferred recruitment schedule.

I know it's different, but for what it's worth, we had a sister in my pledge class that started the Disney internship program days after pledging. I was in a colonizing class, and to be honest, I'm not sure how she did all of her new member work, but it was worked out and she was an OUTSTANDING sister -- though we were all really confused about WHERE she came from when we moved in to our house the 2nd year (she was at Disney almost a full year away from the chapter before returning)!

Good luck in any case. Studying abroad is a great opportunity and I would not let recruitment change your plans. You never know, you might even have some future sisters traveling with you and not even know it yet!

My niece pledged Tri Delta last year and was in a similar situation. I think that she only missed a week at the end of the new member period and they initiated her when she got back to school in the Fall.

Sounds like it would be a good idea to at least visit any chapter doing informal. If you click with the sisters, then the problem might be solved.

Sidebar: She must be outstanding. I am amazed she came back to school. Seriously. The Disney Intern program is notorious for turning bright and talented people into alcoholic drop outs who spend the rest of their days selling sno-cones at Magic Kingdom.

My youngest sister was in the college program. She came home to Iowa just fine (she went for the summer, not a semester or full year), but she had some crazy stories to tell. It was very similar to my work at Club Med immediately after graduation - lots of drugs and sex with anyone of either gender and general mayhem. They both have very cult-like corporate cultures and it really does suck some people in. And I'm so glad I didn't get sucked into all of it. I had friends die, get maimed and become drug addicts because of their appreciation of the "lifestyle."

oh wow that's amazing to hear! hopefully, I can do the same. How do you think I could make a suggestion about my case and in particular state how I could possibly be a great sister while I'm abroad and within my return.
