This is an EXCELLENT resource to go to, for answers to your questions: http://panhellenic.tripod.com/FAQ.html
(Full Credit to Barbara "PnguinTrax" of Zeta Tau Alpha, who has helped us all tremendously with our questions).
This will be a great starting point for you to do your research in your decision. Also, don't forget that if you click on the Message Boards, there is one that has the heading "Rush", which is a good resource as well. Good Luck and Happy Researching!

Soccerchik: when I posted, I made the assumption that you wanted to go through Panhellenic Rush.
Just to clarify, the sororities of the "National Pan-Hellenic Council" which are: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and
Sigma Gamma Rho have historically had black membership.
Please note that the "National Pan-Hellenic Council" and the "National Panhellenic Conference (www.npcwomen.org)" are 2 different sorority governing bodies.

Gloriajean,
First, thank you for clarifying that the NPC and NPHC are 2 different bodies. It's easy to get the two confused. But, I have a question. Why was it necessary for you to for to "clarify" that AKA, DST, ZPhiB and SGRho have historically black memberships? I didn't come behind you and say the sororities of the NPC have historically caucasian memberships. If Soccerchick, or anyone, chooses to go to these sites, the NPHC site in particular, to see what the organizations are about, that fact will become clear. I don't think it's necessary for that to be explained before hand. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, age, religion, or physical challenge.

Here's something to consider...I'm not sure what grade you're in, but you could peruse the websites of the Panhellenic Councils and sororities of either the school you're going to attend, or other schools that you're considering...look to see what Rush consists of, what the sororities are doing...at some schools, you can even see the lists of sororities and fraternities (NPC and NPHC) and their collective GPA's for the semester.

Soccerchik,
Do you have any specific questions about sororites? Or comments that we could help you with. Your wording in your post seems to indicate you've seen, or heard storys/activites that might have reflected poorly on greek life.

Artimis-
No...I haven't heard anything bad about greek life...I just don't have much info about it. But otherwise, I mean how hard is it to get in? And is it bad if you're not a legacy? I don't know what else to ask...but any info is appreciated.
AlphaChiGirl-

Do you know what college you want to go to?
Every sorority is different in terms of likes, dislikes, activities, Study ethics, etc. Go through rush regardless. You aren't comitted to anything by just rushing. You'll get to meet the chapters at your school and see where you fit in the best. I can only be more specific about Penn State University. But otherwise...any more questions feel free to e mail me! Good luck with the rest of High school and onto college!

You could also talk to your friends who are in sororities in college and ask them a bit about sorority life, what they like, dislike, etc. However, when you go through Rush, only YOU can decide which is the sorority which best suits you.
If you know where you'll be going to college, check out the website for your school. There is a chance that there might be a link off of the home page that will be all about Student Organizations. Also, when you go through Rush, you'll be assigned a Rush Counsellor (often referred to as a Rho Chi) and this is the person who you'll direct your questions to, if you have any, during the Rush period. Happy Rushing!
