Alexandra Robbins' Views on "Sorority Culture," Sexual Assault, etc.

Alexandra Robbins gives us her opinions on sorority culture and campus sexual assault. Robbins is, as many GCers will recall, the (in)famous author of “Pledged.”

Now, even with all her unidentified “sources” and broad-brush assertions, it seems to me that her opinion piece makes a few fairly good points, although those points are probably not as universally true as she seems to imply.

For example, some sorority chapters quite likely do place such an emphasis on socializing / partying with the “best” fraternities that they disregard or cover up dangers to their own members (or even actual assaults). And some chapters do participate in mixers with questionable themes of the “CEOs and office hos” variety –- themes that reinforce concepts of female subordination and sexual availability.

Interesting.

In the back of my mind I wondered what she would have to say about recent events. Because of her book, she will be forever called upon to comment on sorority issues, for better or for worse.

Again, this idiot refuses to see that many of these issues are young adult male and female issues that are not exclusive to fraternities and sororities.
