Fireflies are rapidly lighting-up my backyard tonight. Anyone else able to view their nocturnal display?

Yes, ours have been out in Indiana for a couple weeks...a little early it seems. They are beautiful on a warm summer evening and highly entertaining for our cats!

So now the mayor of New Orleans is threatening to shut down the city again.

Apparently people aren't following the rules. There were several graduation parties and a Juneteenth party where people were not wearing masks or doing any social distancing. The other day, I was at a biergarten that was running at 100% capacity (we're at phase 2 which allows restaurants to operate at 50% capacity) and half the customers weren't wearing masks or practicing social distancing. Masks are mandatory but people aren't wearing them.

COVID deaths are down, but cases are up.

So now, all of us, including those of us who have been responsible and have been following the rules, get to suffer because some people don't feel like wearing a mask and doing the right thing ... in a city that relies on tourism.

This year has sucked the big one so far. Between COVID, murder hornets (actually, what happened to them?), George Floyd getting killed, and protests turning violent (don't get me wrong, the Black Lives Matter protests had to happen, and I'd've been right out there protesting if not for COVID ... I'm upset that violence and looting have come out of some of the protests), this year needs a do-over.

This evening, my husband and I are going to a "New Year's Redeux" party where we're going to celebrate the start of 2020-A. Time to bust out the bubbly and hope that the second half of this year is an improvement.

And he and I are going to take our first step towards that by voting tomorrow in Louisiana's primary. COVID may keep me away from the protests, but it ain't keeping me away from the polls.

ETA: The party is at a friend's house. She has a pretty big backyard so we will be able to practice social distancing while knocking back the bubbly.

For the first time in my life—6 decades—and I lived through and was involved in the 60’s social upheaval and demonstrations—I feel almost hopeless, like the country is barreling down a road and nobody’s driving.
I’m afraid—and some days almost in despair.

Then I suck it up and look for the positives...and there are some! But this year has tested my normally-positive persona. And I almost weep for our children and beyond...

THANKS FOR THIS THREAD! I’ve been needing to say this.

What you said.

But I have my faith and my family and I will keep toiling along and living for both.
