Quick...what is the term...

Pam wants A on her 1st list and B on her 2nd choice, but sororities have her in reverse.

Some one just asked me but mind I'd blank.

Cross-cut is when doing PattiPNM puts A then B, and she is tops in Bs list but not As list and then ends up getting dropped all together because of quota. RFM is designed to prevent this.

Cross cutting

As we used the term, it would only be cross cutting if Pam ended up without a bid - but in the scenario as presented Pam should end up with a bid to B because she is on their first list - she would only be bumped off both lists if enough pnms had listed B first to result in Pam not being offered a bid to B.

I have seen several different definitions of cross-cutting used here, so I'm interested to know how others use the term.

eta - Maybe the term she is looking for is "screwed". HA!

Cross cutting is the term (excuse) women throw out there when they don't get a bid. Even if the original situation happened, it's not cross cutting. Girl was just not high enough on anyone's bid list to get a bid or she got her second choice because she was on their first list.

I agree...I think screwed sums it up best. :-)

I replied, Tough Luck... But pnms should read the posts about not getting their first choice and it worked out wonderfully.

Note: This doesn't happen nearly as much with RFM, as "screwed" girl is likely going to be cut early by the group she put first (as they have few invites and not as much room to "string her along" only to put her on 2nd list.) She probs would never end up at their pref party nowadays. lol.

What? Not true at all. Plenty of women attend prefs at chapters for which they are not on the first bid list.

After I read that, I was like "I must have been really tired when I wrote that."

The point I was trying to make: Generally speaking, cross cutting doesn't happen anymore because the bulk of cuts happen earlier rather than later. You're less likely to see the case of Suzie who is not high enough on anyone's bid list to get a bid anywhere because the effect of RFM sort of "thins the pref list herd" a little. It evens out in such a way that PNMs are generally going to get a bid somewhere.

What is formerly our "cross cut PNM" now gets a bid somewhere, even if it's not her first choice and it's the WRC who invited back all in pool for preference.

{Sidenote: I find that cross-cutting was pretty rare even pre-RFM, but that's neither here nor there.}

No, but it was a good excuse to use to save face.

"Screwed" pretty much sums it up...

When I rushed, there were 4 NPCs, a local, and an NPHC sorority at my school. Only the 4 NPCs participated in FR the year I rushed. Roughly speaking, we went 4 (open houses) - 3 (first invitational) - 2 (pref).

So my concept of cross-cutting is this: Suzy PNM is invited to sororities A, B, and C for the first invitational round. She loves A and B, and likes C. She is invited to all 3 pref parties, but she can only attend two, so she regrets C. She's so far down A and B's bid lists that both chapters make quota before reaching Suzy's name, and since she didn't attend C's pref, she is not on their bid lists. No bid for Suzy. If C didn't make quota, they could offer a snap bid, but if they made quota, or if they didn't make quota but chose not to snap Suzy, Suzy is SOL.

Cross-cutting is not a thing and it never was. It was the MISTAKEN idea that a bidless PNM would have received a bid had she listed the chapters in a different order on her final ranking. It doesn't work that way, and there are threads around that get into the nitty-gritty of it.
