Rush at South Carolina
I'm looking to rush a fraternity at University of South Carolina next year. I'm from nearby Atlanta. Can anyone give me some advice/tips?

I would suggest looking at the national and local websites (if available) to narrow down the list of frats that you're interested in, and if possible requesting more information from them. If you can "narrow down the field", so to speak, you'll have more time during rush to make a better decision.

This isn't NPHC, I don't think.

Overall, though, it's the bigness of the car that counts the most. Because when something bad happens in a really big car – accidentally speeding through the middle of a gang of unruly young people who have been taunting you in a drive-in restaurant, for instance – it happens very far away – way out at the end of your fenders. It's like a civil war in Africa; you know, it doesn't really concern you too much. - P.J. O'Rourke

There is a real informative site on USC Greek Life website. It gives you tons of info, just check with your school website and as offered look at the national websites.

The son of a friend of my mother will be a freshman at South Carolina this fall and is interested in joining a fraternity. I gather that South Carolina fraternities have summer rush parties and have a good idea of who they want well in advance. What is the best way for him to get his foot in the door/to have as many options as possible? In other words, is it appropriate to contact chapters to inquire about summer rush parties? Should he look for fraternity alumni to write him recs like sororities do? I know joining a fraternity is going to be important enough to him to make the 8 hour drive down a couple times this summer for rush parties, but I am just wondering how to advise him to have the best chances at the most chapters.

violetpretty, I don't particularly know about SC rush, but can comment based on info with UT rush (which is probably very similar).
Having the alumni he knows contact the rush chairs to give them a heads up that he's coming is a great idea, not like a formal rec, just some basic info and that he's interested in rushing. Then the rush chairs will contact him about the parties.

I don't know about SC but at the other SEC schools it is very important to go to summer rush events. It lets the guys get to know you better and place a face on a name. And attending summer events would make you much more likely to get a bid.
