Penn State: New Model for Spring Recruitment

"Partially structured" recruitment is being used for spring (informal) NPC recruitment at Penn State. A publicity campaign is also being used to create interest. See

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive...05dnews-01.asp

Some comments in the article and a small bar graph display touch on figures for NPC membership and spring recruitment at Penn State.

THANK YOU GOD.

I think complete free for all COB is a bad idea at schools with teeny Greek systems, let alone one the size of Penn State.

(note: I'm not talking about when sororities only have 1 or 2 spots to fill - I mean when the majority are under total.)

As someone who participated in "partially-structured" spring recruitment, I can say that it does help the PNAMs a great deal. All seven of the sororities on my campus participated in the big open house event which was held in one central location.

This gave me the opportunity to see ALL of the chapters in one setting. I wasn't forced to pick and choose which parties to attend. I didn't have strong preconceived notions about the chapters, but I did have some prior opinions. Other chapters I knew nothing about. Having the chance to go to an open house allowed me to meet chapters I might not have visited had I been forced to blindly pick where to attend.

My school has done partially structured spring recruitment for the sororities (usually 5-8 out of the 11 on campus) that have spaces during the past few years. It's always worked really well for us, so I'm glad that other sororities are using the approach. It allows for PNMs to be exposed to as many houses as possible in order for them to find the best fit (or just be introduced to some of the sororities with the intent to rush "for real" next fall). The more laid-back approach appealed to girls who wouldn't necessarily go through fall rush, but might not have been aware of the option to COB. And in my opinion, it was much less stress than either formal rush or COB for the sorority women -- no crazy decorations and skits and bumping routines to worry about, but you didn't have to stress about some new COB event every week and getting another girl to hang around until the next pledge period either.

As you can see, I'm a big fan of partially structured . . . ;-)

We are going to do this but allow all chapters to participate. We have 1 struggling chapter and 4 stong chapters. That 1 is the only one below total. We are setting a quota and doing bid matching after the invitational round. There are only open houses and an invitational round. I hope this works well.
