Ole Miss SAE closed
Wow... the University of Mississippi's SAE chapter has been closed for "health-and-safety concerns and members not upholding the fraternity’s national standards for behavior.", i.e. risk management issues.
The chapter was founded in 1866, making it one of the oldest SAE chapters in the country.

"All current members of the chapter have been suspended from the fraternity indefinitely and members recruited this fall have been released, according to the statement. The statement also said SAE hopes to one day re-establish a chapter at the university. The chapter had been on campus since 1866."

It will be interesting to see if the SAE pledge class opts to ban together and join another fraternity. This happened at Ole Miss in 2014 when Sig Ep was closed, their pledge class was released and the pledges (majority) joined Phi Kappa Tau.

“Members recruited this fall have been released” confuses me. I was under the impression that SAE requires new members to be initiated within a specific number of hours after accepting their bids. That would mean that the chapter shouldn’t have pledges this close to the end of the semester.

I'm not sure this chapter was so orthodox.

Perhaps they thought their HQ was providing a suggestion.

I was told they were not following any rules or policies. I wonder what will happen to their house over the next few years?

Are there any currently unhoused groups at Ole Miss that might rent it?

Once again, it seems like an S A E Chapter does not follow the doctrine of their National.
Never sure where to lay the blame?

I don't know what the deal is with this chapter, but it takes guts to close a chapter that is 151 years old. Kudos to SAE for doing so. SAE has a tough road to ride out, but they will come out the other side that much better.

We no longer have pledge classes, at least according to our national fraternity laws.

Correct, within 96 hours of receiving a bid.

Judging by their attitude toward, well, all of our standards of behavior, exactly this.

Because this is totally unique to one fraternity, right?

Those who live in glass houses ought not cast stones.
On a national level, you'd be hard pressed to find a national working harder to turn around their cultural issues than SAE.

I don't know why I laughed so hard at this.
So remember how Clemsongirl created those maps about NPC expansion... is it sad that if she were to create one for the fraternities, I think there would be more activity on the maps if she focused on chapter closures rather than those being (re)chartered...?
Perhaps that's just the impression that I get reading through the colonies/expansion/closure thread lately.
