Is it even worth it?
Hi Ladies!
In the fall, I'll be rushing at a pretty competitive school in Florida and will be rushing as a sophomore. I'm not the prettiest girl in the world and am somewhat overweight but all my friends in sororities say I have a great personality and should rush anyways. Are these 2 things going weigh heavily against me? Is it worth the money, time and effort? I really want too but am nervous about it.

A couple of things to think about:
*Every girl in a sorority is not a size 0 model.
*Whether it's worth it is up to YOU. We can't really determine that for you.
I suggest taking a look at this thread:

Best of luck to you in making your decision.

You don't have to be a size 2 and a super model.
We are all different shapes, sizes, colors, whatever!
And being in a sorority is worth any amount of money in my opinion!
I am making life-long friendships, learning valuable lessons I wouldn't have learned without my sorority and my sisters, and by being involved I'm going to have an awesome resume once I graduate!
Believe me, don't worry about not getting in, you'll end up where you are meant to be, those girls will be your sisters until the end.
Definitely rush, it's worth every moment!

I'm from Florida, I went through the process in Florida, and I did not view myself back in the day as the "perfect" candidate. We all do come in different shapes, sizes, and with a variety of visual beauty. We are unique and special.
Without knowing the university you are speaking of it may be a disadvantage to be a sophomore and it may be a slight disadvantage to be somewhat overweight for certain groups. I am sure you have an idea what I am expressing here, but do keep in mind there is a group for you and they will be perfect!
Go through the process and enjoy each moment of it. Stick it out and have the time of your life. You will know as your week progresses if it is worth it and if you feel like you have found a sisterhood for you.
Wish you Luck!

For informational purposes, let me put this out there:
No PNM is guaranteed a bid.
Also, at some of the larger schools in FL (FSU, UF, UCF), sophomores have a harder time getting bids than freshmen do. I know that at UF specifically, it is much tougher for a sophomore.

If you never try you will never know if you'd have suceeded.
Your sophomore status and your weight might go against you to some degree, but keep a VERY open mind - don't just aim for the most popular group or the one your friends are in.

I think the lack of confidence demonstrated by your post will hurt you much more than your weight or appearance ever could.

Ditto!... You are probably better looking than you give yourself credit for. If you can, before rush try some things to boost your confidence. And hey, even if you don't get into a sorority, recruitment is a great way to boost your speaking skill so just that alone is worth it.
I wish you the best of luck! I know you'll knock them dead
