Phone call to Catch up
Let's say you've been working on getting a job for many, many months.
It's not as if positions open often at this firm; it's usually about opportunities where the partners really want to make someone else a part of their group. But I did notice that they had put out word that they were looking to fill a position.
So with that, I sent out an email to one of the partners saying we should catch up and all that. He replied to call him today.
Now the funny thing is, it's not like a magnificent amount of things has happened over the past 2 months to me. I don't know what the heck to talk about. The summer months are the slower months of the year.
What should I talk about? How long should I talk?

Rudey,
Some small talk about baseball, the city, etc... then talk about the current projects you are working on, commisserate on the slow season and how you're looking forward to the upcoming busy season.... also mention the open spot and see if you can help...
This could also be a good time to address the personnel issues that you discussed in an earlier thread--- how you feel that your team members aren't pulling their weight, even spending time at their desks reading. It's all in how you present it in order to be seen as concerned and a problem solver, and not a whiner.
Good luck--- let us know how it goes!

I don't think it's ever a good idea to trash talk your current position, even if what you're saying is accurate. If he complains about co-workers, even if he's trying to look like he's being constructive, he'll really just look like an ass.
Baseball is good though, unless he's a Cubs fan.

If he was someone you felt really friendly with what would you talk about?
Talk to him like a friend you respect. A friend that has control over a job you want.

Go check out a copy of "What Color is Your Parachute" from the local library and read the section on "informational interviews".

I'm sorry, but that has to be one of the most recommended and most useless books I've ever read.
