I wondered about that as well. My best guess is that the four-year institution (which may be one and the same as the institution that grants the associate degree) really doesn't care if you get your associate's degree or not. They care about how many credits they will accept for transfer. But the girl in question may still have cared about completing her associate's degree. As someone who likes to finish things, I can understand that.
I have a Master's degree with associated honors, but my local community college (where I still take classes) just notified me that I'm eligible for their honorary society. And you know what? I will probably accept. If I stay around long enough, they'll probably grant me an A.A. as well (if only by accident, LOL!)
