Yes, pledging in the NPHC orgs was banned in 1990. Pre-pledging is considered hazing and is not supposed to be done. In other words, it's not OK to pre-pledge. If one is caught pre-pledging, the pre-pledgees can (and in most cases will) be BARRED from seeking membership in that organization FOR LIFE. Also, the members doing the pre-pledgeing face suspension and monetary sanctions themselves. I would not recommend it. It's a very selfish act.
Yes, there are ways to get information about the org other than pre-pledging. As many of us have said in other posts, there is a wealth of information on the internet. People seeking membership now are spoiled in that respect. As for kissing-up, don't. Your service, grades and personality should speak for themselves, but DO take the time to get to know the members. Be true to yourself and put your best foot forward.
