Snap Bidding

OK I am confused about snap bidding. In fact, what is snap bidding? I am an active member of 2 years of my sorority but I have no idea what this concept is.

Generally snap bidding takes place between when final bid lists are issued to the chapters and PNMs picking up their bids. At my school, chapters that didn't make quota could start at noon and chapters that made quota but were under total could start at one. PNMs that qualified were girls who either were bidless or had dropped out of rush. PXs had until noon to let their PNMs know if they were bidless or eligible for snap bids. A designated woman from the chapter, usually the girl that Pref'd her, Pres., or VP Recruitment would call the PNM and extend an invitation to join. When it's all done right, the other chapter members and new members won't know who was and wasn't snapped.

If your group always makes quota and is at or above total, you shouldn't need to use it. If there are sororities on your campus under quota or total after bid matching, they should be using it - it's a Panhellenic policy.

I don't think they do but our Panhellenic Council for Winthrop is just extremely messed up.

The girls who are snapped know they were, it's the other members that wouldn't.

I'm not sure if we do this at OU...perhaps they do...I guess I wouldn't know unless I was the person assigned to do the snapping

this was a big issue this past year with our sorority
several girls were told by another sorority were told that if they wanted their sorority
they should drop out or not sign a bid card
and then, they would snap bid them on bid day

Yikes, that would make me nervous. What if they ended up liking the girls who continued through, then didn't have any space for snap bidding?? I don't think telling girls to drop out so they can get a snap bid later, or actually doing the droping out, is very smart at all.

There was an old thread about this (maybe it was COB) Anyway, they told the girls to drop them and in the end, the girls were left empty handed...never got that bid.
Anyone remember the thread or the incident???

Perhaps not that incident, JAM, but it happens all the time with a certain sorority at my school. They do not snap them, but they COB.

My chapter regularly uses snap bidding, and it's pretty successful. The way our Panhellenic works it, each chapter compiles a bid list and a snap list, and the advisors of chapters below quota can snap bidless women immediately after bid-matching takes place. The advisors do it to keep things from going free-for-all and to minimize the number of sorority women who know that a PNM was snapped.

ETA: At my school (AFAIK), chapters may only snap to quota. They may then COB to total.

You can only snap to fill quota opportunities before bids are distributed. Anything after bids are distributed or to fill total opportunities is COB.

Yes. That's the idea. Depending on the school, current active members might be able to figure things out if a snapped woman wasn't at their Pref party, but none of the rest of the pledge class needs to know.
