I'm going to some cob/cor events this week
I was thinking of trying informal rush next semester, but I found out that this week one of the sororites here at tech is having some events this week, so I'm excited and a little nervous. My greek experiences so far haven't been the greatest. I've finally decided that I really do want to have a place to belong, and to hopefully be a part of greek life. My freshman yr. I tried formal rush, and was cut by all of the sororites, for reasons unknown to me, ( I didn't have any recs though) no one in my family has been greek that I know of, and I didn't know anyone that had gone greek. I decided to check into some orgs. the second semster that yr. and check into informal rush, and did. I got a couple of invites, but they were weeks apart, and the week before one of the events I went to check into a service org. that seemed really cool. The service org. pretty much promised to give me everything I was looking for from greek life. The first events for the sorority stuff that I went to was nice, but I'm on the quiet side and felt I didn't really get to know too many members there, and was so awed by how nice the house was, and how friendly the recruitment chair was to me, on making sure I felt welcomed. I wasn't sure what to do when I got a bid from them, because the serivice groups pinning stuff was that weekend if I wanted to join and the other sorority's stuff didn't start until a couple weeks from then. I was calling my mom everyday not sure about things, and she told me to talk to the people in charge of rush with all groups, and follow my heart. I was so confused on sorority stuff, I was worried what If i realize I don't fit in, and how expensive dues are... , and with the promises from the other org. on them being so great, I went with that. I had a good time my pledge semester, and then things with that org. seemed to fall apart my first semester as an active, I decided I didn't agree with a lot of things this organization did, and how the promises I was told of were empty ones. I decided to try spring rush again last yr. and had a great time , but my grades were really bad.. so I think that's what hurt me then, I've been working on my grades since, and would have done formal rush in the fall, but my gpa was still needing some improvement and still does, and I hope if things work out with me in a sorority , I could benefit from study hrs. and sisters helping me in my weak areas of study. I'm keeping an open mind and hoping for the best, I wrote an e-mail to the panhellenic advisor to let the sororites that are still having events to contact me. I guess just wish me luck...

Best wishes, raiderchic. I understand how complicated and crazy rushing and all college decisions can be. Your mom's advice holds true in all things: Follow Your Heart. If you feel that a GLO can bring something special to your life, keeping going for it. I am, and I graduated two years ago! Remember that academics are the main priority though. Let us know how things go for you.

COB is Continuous Open Bidding. It is a time other than formal recruitment when chapters may accept new members.
The rules for COB (or COR -- Continuous Open Recruitment) vary from campus to campus.
At Texas Tech this year all groups are being allowed to COB until they have 165 members, so lots of groups are holding informal events -- like the ice cream social that raiderchic is going to -- in order to meet and possibly accept new members.
COB is often preferred by potential new members because the atmopshere is much more relaxed and "real" than formal recruitment.
