Thumbs up NY Cares Volunteer Server-A-Thon

This is a great opportunity for people to get involved! -ZetaAce
*******************************************
Join the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Team, New York Cares and 10,000 volunteers for the 9th Annual Volunteer Serve-A-Thon - an incredible day of hands-on volunteering at New York City public schools which
raises money for New York Cares' year-round volunteer programs.

On Saturday, October 14, 2000, New York Cares Day 2000, we will be painting and cleaning 1 of the 110 public schools throughout the 5 boroughs as we strive
to put the spotlight on volunteerism and help to raise more than $100,000 to fund New York Cares' year-round volunteer programs.

·Paint murals, playgrounds, and classrooms!
·Revitalize gardens! Refurbish libraries! Reorganize
storage areas!
·Help to raise pledge money to support thousands of
New York Cares' volunteer programs!
·Make a difference for your community!

New York Cares is a nonprofit organization that plans more than 300 hands-on volunteer projects every month to help New York City's neediest residents. Volunteers tutor children, neediest residents. Volunteers tutor children, feed the hungry, assist people living with HIV/AIDS, revitalize gardens, take homeless children on recreational outings, bridge the Digital Divide, visit the elderly, and do so much more. Projects happen in the mornings, in the evenings, and on weekends. And, New York Cares offers a range of commitment levels so volunteers can give a few hours per week, or a few hours per year.

That sounds like a terrific idea. I wish I were able to be there, but it gives me a great idea for the area I live in. The West Virginia Public school system is very poor, this kind of event could not only bring communities together, but help raise money/supplies etc for the school system. I live in a town of about 2,000. This past spring, about a week before school was out, 3 kids broke into the middle school in our small town and set fire to it (these are 5th and 6th grade children). The fire caused over 6 million dollars in damage. Now the school still stands as it did the night that it burned. This school was not only a place for learning, but it was a historic part of the town which was built after the depression by Eleanor Roosevelt (who the town was then named after). It saddens me everyday to drive by on my way to work and see the children now walking to 'portable' school buildings located in the front yard of the rubble that used to be their small school. This kind of event could help the teachers (who had to dip into their own pockets to pay for the decorations/bulitin boards/supplies)be reimbursed and help them to aquire more supplies and help with the clean up of the old school to make way for the rebuilding of a new school.

mgdzkm433- That's very sad to hear Children need better facilities to learn in than porto-schools! Maybe you can organize a drive (similar to NYcares) to help get the school rebuilt and/or get better supplies for the schools. Good luck!

The New York Cares Spring Clean up day was a blast! The Zetas planted a wonderful garden in Brooklyn. Go Sorors! I actually went up to a location in the Bronx with some friends...We had a blast painting the railing at Orchard Beach!

New York Cares Day 2001
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the schedule for New York Cares Day?
A: This year, like last, we're asking volunteers to go
directly to their school sites to register at 8:30am.
Volunteers will work at their sites until 3:00pm, with
a break for lunch. After clean-up, make plans to head
over to the New York Cares Day Thank You Celebration
to celebrate your effect with other volunteers.

Q: Is there a fee to participate?
A: If you unable to raise pledges, New York Cares will
be requesting a $5 suggested donation to cover the
cost of their T-shirt at registration on the morning
of Cares Day. The only other costs volunteers may
incur will be for lunch and subway fare. New York
Cares Day is a serve-a-thon, and New York Cares'
largest fundraiser. Pledges help support both the work
we do on New York Cares Day and all year round. No
individual is required to raise money, but the more
money you raise, the more we can give back to the New
York community. Simply put, we can't do it without
you!

Q: Children participant in New York Cares?
A: Yes! If you would like to include participants
under the age of 18, then your chapter must assume
liability for these team members. To do so, please
send New York Cares a letter on your chapter's letter
by Tuesday, October 9, 2001, stating that your chapter
will assume liability for these participants. Please
keep in mind that New York Cares Day is designed for
volunteer's age and older.
