Pi Delta Psi - Baruch College
The Baruch College (CUNY) President has confirmed the death of a member of Pi Delta Psi during a pledge event in the Poconos. This is the link to local newspaper. http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbc...NEWS/131219935
This was an unsanctioned event. Baruch was informed of the tragedy by the fraternity's HQ.

Why would you wait to get help if your friend is unresponsive? I just don't understand. Such a sad story, indeed.

How awful.
I read a description of the ritual / hazing on Wikipedia. *smh* How could you do something like that to someone who is soon to be your brother?

Did they wait? The article I saw on cnn.com indicated that the brothers brought Deng to the hospital "early Sunday morning" and that the hazing took place "in the early morning hours".
As to why people do sometimes wait - it's probably fear. Some of you may remember the story of Scott Krueger, the FIJI pledge at MIT who died from alcohol poisoning. When Scott passed out (with a .4 BAC), nobody called 911 right away, probably because they didn't want to get in trouble - I guess they were hoping he'd just sleep it off and be ok in the morning. Only when Scott choked on his own vomit did anyone call the cops.
*smh*

I read on NBC that they waited a bit before taking him to the hospital.

Deng suffered a major brain injury, but his frat brothers did not immediately call for help.Instead, they took him into the house, put him by the fire, changed his clothes and Googled his symptoms, police said in a search warrant.
It was an hour or more before they drove the unresponsive victim to a hospital, where doctors put him on life support. Deng, who graduated from the elite Bronx High School of Science, died Monday morning.

The Pennsylvania DA is preparing an indictment. Greek life on campus is quite small, and campus is shaken up.

Victoria L. Chan, a member of Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority Inc. wrote a post about it, in case anyone is interested. It's at:

Just Why?
I don't get why people ever think this stupidity is a good idea or that it "builds character" It doesn't. It breeds fear
Also thanks to the classless, careless and demeaning act purpatrated by this organization they are giving Greeks in the area a bad name

The investigation is ongoing. From the Baruch College Provost:
"Likewise, the President and I, on the recommendation of the Student Affairs team, have decided to impose a moratorium on Greek social organization pledging activities during the Fall 2014 semester. I have written a letter to the officers of Baruch’s social Greek-letter fraternities and sororities announcing this. Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Art King will work with student affairs division staff to evaluate future alternatives for Greek life at Baruch. I will need assurance that students are not placed in a situation that compromises their physical safety or well-being during pledging. "
