Talking Craziest sorority or fraternity house amenities

The mention of tanning beds in Ole Miss's ADPi house (see this thread http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...=150122&page=3) made me wonder about other crazy amenities at chapter houses. I don't know of any off hand other than the aforementioned tanning beds. C'mon! There's gotta be some other crazy ones out there. My hubby's old fraternity house had a sand volleyball court, but I don't think that's very unusual (seen them at other houses). Alpha Xi at Texas has a swimming pool.

I'm looking forward to this thread! There was nothing crazy in my house - the things that outsiders seem to find the most bizarre are sleeping porches and servers.

I loved the sleeping porch - actually just a big dark room filled with bunk beds. The bedrooms in my sorority house were small, so in a double room there was only room for one bed, so one roommate would sleep on the sleeping porch. The questions I always had to answer when people asked about it - it's inside so no, we don't get rained on and yes, you have a specific bed that you know is yours, and no, there were never boys snuck in to my knowledge!

Servers were just fraternity men who worked at the house, setting up and cleaning up lunch and dinner in exchange for free meals (and unlimited invites to date functions!) - just like students worked in the dining halls for work-study, but I guess calling these men "servers" made us seem extra fancy. (Meals were set up as a buffet anyway, these guys were not bringing us plates to the table!)

Back in the day....

Not sure if this is still happening but we had "house boys" who brought our food to the tables, refilled our sweet tea glasses and took our plates when we were done (and brought our dessert). It was fabulous. The head house boy seated our house mom each night and tended the main table.

What school and which years did you have house boys?

C'mon, peeps! Where's a frat house that had a bowling alley or the sorority house that had a nail salon?

There was a fraternity house at UMass (ahem, I believe there is a GC poster on here who was in that house), that was an old elementary school. There were blackboards in the rooms because they had been classrooms. There were parties held in the old cafetoria/ gym. It was pretty different and unique.

Pretty common now - esp in new houses. All the new ones at Alabama have them.

Yeah, elevators are probably part of the building code for commercial structures

Rumors had been circulating in Gamma Phi Beta land that the new house at Alabama has a Starbuck's...no, it doesn't! It has a coffee shop style study room, but not an actual Starbuck's.

We had busboys back in the 80s...I think that was pretty common. Ours were all FIJIs.

Our house needed an elevator! We had a sister who uses a wheelchair and she could not live in the house because all the bedrooms were upstairs.

Elevators are required now for ADA compliance. Buildings built before the ADA was passed are grandfathered in.

Every sorority house at Ole Miss had house boys, who served dinner exactly as described above, in the 80's. It really was fabulous!

Unless something has changed in the past couple of years, the Gamma Phi Beta chapter at SDSU still has hashers which serve Monday night dinner.
