While this is very sad, and the chapter might be to blame for sleep deprivation, IMHO they shouldn't be responsible for the death.
The article says they were driving to a hair appointment and does not indicate that doing so was requested or mandated by the sorority. It would appear that the driver made the choice to drive to an optional appointment, despite not being in good condition to do so. If this had been during finals week and she was sleep deprived from studying, would the parents sue the university or the professors?

In another article, I read the hair appointment was set up by the "big sisters" so they can have their hair done for their ceremony. They were also practicing for their ceremony the night prior and didn't have a chance to sleep
