Yay-- another song I actually know!

At Judson, we sang a variation of that song. I bet the Alpha Phis would love our version.

Tell me why, the stars do shine.
Tell me why, the ivy twines.
Tell me why, the sky's so blue.
Tell me, Dear Judson, just why we love you.

Because God made the star to shine.
Because God made the ivy twine.
Because God made the sky so blue.
God made Dear Judson, that's why we love you.

I do believe that God above,
Created you for me to love.
He picked you out from all the rest.
Because He knew, sis, that I loved you best.

Now, you know this is an old Southern song, right?

It's a lullaby. If it's a Southern song, Robert E. Lee would be rolling over in his grave that my NORTHERN chapter was singing it.

Also, has anybody ever seen the old song books from the 30s/40s? My chapter has one (how, I don't know, since we were chartered in 1969) that has a song demanding a fraternity pin. It talks about not wanting candy, or diamonds, or flowers, but a fraternity pin. SigEp is the only chapter on our campus that still pins that we know of, and there's SIX actives dating SigEps right now and only one is pinned. I think they're going to start singing that song during serenades.

Lightbulb New Gamma Phi Song

HI!
The girl her at Beta Gamma came up with a new song! It is adorable, and goes along an army theme.

When we're walking down the hall
When we're walking down the hall
We stand out above them all
We stand out above them all
We're sweet and cute and full of flare
We're sweet and cute and full of flare
All the guys they stop and stare
All the guys they stop and stare
We're Gamma Phi Beta and we're here to say:
We're Gamma Phi Beta and we're here to say:
Gamma Phi's the only way!
Gamma Phi's the only way!

The last line is more fun if you just scream instead of using teh tune of teh song! It can also be changed to Greek Life's the only way if necessary!

Gamma Phi Songs!

HI! I am Kate, and a Gamma Phi at Bowling Green!
Here is one of the songs we do for Recruitment! It is army style, and meant to be repeated:

When were walking down the hall!
(When were walking down the hall!)
We stand out above them all!
(We stand out above them all!)
We're sweet and cute and full of flare!
(We're sweet and cute and full of flare!)
All the guys they stop and stare!
(All the guys they stop and stare!)
We're Gamma Phi Beta, and we're here to say,
(We're Gamma Phi Beta, and we're here to say,)
Gamma Phi's the only way!> It is best if this line is just screamed!
(Gamma Phi's the only way!)

Good Luck Ladies!

During rush, our chapter sang a song to us (rushees) and it had something in it about:
we have the legs of _______
we have the ____ of _____
... we need our chests..... blah blah blah
i'm sure I'm going to learn the song soon, but it is STUCK in my head---- and I don't like things to be stuck in my head if i don't know some of the words!!

candle pass song

For candle passes we sing the following song in 2 rounds.

Love, love, love, love
Moon is shining up above
Follow your heart to the one that you love
The one that your love

If anyone has any other good chants for Recruitment, that would be great. Thanks!!

songs

We just had a recruitment workshop today!

We were going over our songs and most of them are the same.

One that I remember the most is:

Shes got one blue, two blue eyes that shine.
Shes a Gamma Phi to the bone.
When you see that girl walking down the street,
You better leave that girl alone!
Shes got eyes like jezabells teeth like pearls,
Gosh oh gee shes a Gamma Phi Girl!
Shes got one blue two blue eyes that shine.
Shes a Gamma Phi to the bone.
Gamma phi my baby, gamma phi.
This is Gamma Phi, baby Gamma Phi!

We do some actions to this song which go with it really well. Im not good at explaining them so if anyone has heard of this they can maybe help me out...

We also do another thing, on our campus there is like a Fraternity row is what they call it beause all the houses are kinda by eachother, we live in pods, like a dorm setting...

On Kearney Campus there's a place to go,
Its called Gamma Phi Beta on Fraternity Row.
They rock and they roll and their really alive.
Gamma Phi Beta they really jive.

Ohh boom boom ditty daddy we love you
Boom boom ditty daddy we love you
Boom boom ditty daddy we love you
Oh Gamma Phi Beta, we love you.

On Kearney Campus there's a place to go,
Its called Gamma Phi Beta on Fraternity Row.
They rock and they roll and their really alive.
Gamma Phi Beta they really jive.

Ohh boom boom ditty daddy why dont you
Boom boom ditty daddy why dont you
Boom boom ditty daddy why dont you
Why dont you pledge Gamma Phi too.....

It is a really fun song... It goes with Claps and the Gamma Phi Beta on Its called Gamma Phi Beta on Fraternity Row... we yell Gamma Phi Beta.. Its really cute so if you have never heard it it would be a good thing to try and rearange for your house...

We do the boom boom diddy daddy one also. During rush we do a Grease skit and that is part of it we also have a lot of other songs for it and if anyone wants the words tell me and I would be more then glad to send them to you. But what our chapter is most know for is our cheer lean a lean. It goes.... 2 times 4 is half of 16 all for Gamma Phi do the lean a lean. A lean a lean a lean a lean a lean a lean (clap) a lean a lean a lean a lean a lean.
And when you are saying a lean a lean you lean on the person next to you and then switch sides when you clap.

Here at Alabama, home of the infamous "door songs," we sing the rushees in and out of the house during formal fall rush. We start out with the "G Phi, GPhiB, Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta" cheer, then go into the "G A MM A, Gamma Phi Beta, Hey!" cheer while stacked on top of each other in the door.

Then we sing one of our two welcome songs as we form a tunnel to let the rushees in:

Gamma Phi Beta welcomes you here,
come on and join our fun and our cheer
We're on the U of A campus, sorority row,
The Gamma Phis shout a welcome hello!
Oh would you like to be another Gamma Phi,
and wear our crescent and pearls on high,
So come on along and we'll show you why,
all over this land, number one's GAMMA PHI!
_________________________________

We welcome you to Gamma Phi Beta,
We're mighty glad you're here
We'll send the air reverberating
with a mighty cheer
We'll sing you in, we'll sing you out,
to you we raise a mighty shout,
hail, hail, the gang's all here
so welcome to Gamma Phi
How do you do?

Then, once the party is over, we lead the girls out and begin singing one of our goodbye songs:

Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye,
goodbye to you from Gamma Phi
When you're home and safe in bed,
Gamma Phi dreams running through your head

Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye,
Goodbye to you from Gamma Phi
When you wake you'll know it's true
Gamma Phi Beta is the one for you!
______________________________

Dream in you sleep, and smile in your dreams
And may all your dreams be of Gamma Phi
We are dreaming tonight neath the crescent's pure light,
The crescent that's shining for Gamma Phi
When home you have gone just remember this song,
And you're always welcome again,
Dream in your sleep and smile in your dreams,
and may all your dreams be of Gamma Phi!

then, finally, we stack in the door and do the two cheers again. It's quite exhausting.

My sister taught me this one - she learned it at Vanderbilt (Alpha Theta) and when I first heard it during Rush at Northwestern - along with all of the other songs she taught me - I got goose bumps because I knew I was home:

You take the legs of Betty Grable
You take the sex of ol' Mae West
You take the grace/face of Elizabeth Taylor
And off Raquel you take the chest
We need the chest!

And then you put them all together
Far better than a Pi Beta Phi
You'll never get more/better lovin' in the whole wide world
Thank from a perfect Gamma Phi
And incidentally I'm a gamma Phi
I'm not a Theta
And incidentally I'm a Gamma Phi

There was a more gracious version for during Rush - pre-pledge night - but it escapes me now.

We also had a candlepassing song that I haven't seen in the posts above, but I could remember it if I saw some of the words I think. This is gonna make me crazy, I fear...

At Southern Cal in the mid 1970's (were any of y'all born then?!), we sang a similar version of your song Mary!

You take the legs of Brigitte Bardot
You take the sex of ol' Mae West
You take the face of Elke Sommer
And from Sophia take the chest
(We need the chest!)
And then you put them all together
It's neither Theta nor Pi Phi
You get more lovin' in this whole wide world
From a perfect Gamma Phi girl
(We really Mean it!)
And incidentally I'm a Gamma Phi too
Bah doo bah doo!

Speaking of songs.....as I am a new sister, I haven't any clue how to sing any of the songs (except for the blessing but I don't know the words!).

Is there an opportunity to obtain a songbook and/or tape of music with the singing (maybe from IHQ) so that I don't take forever to learn everything?

I beleive there is a tape of the songs but I'm not sure. Loraine Meech at IH might be able to help you (she seems to know everything). Her email is lmeech@gammaphibeta.org

Yes, she does! I am always emailing her with silly questions. And she is very sweet and answers right away.

Original Songs

Hi Sisters!
Our past MVP wrote a bunch of songs for our rush! Keep in mind we're at UCSanta Cruz and have a very small greek system!

Greek Queen Song
Tune: Dancing Queen by Abba

You can be greek, you can be greek
Having the time of your life
Oh Oh be that girl, join Gamma Phi
And be a Greek Queen!

Students here don't know where to go
Trying to find someone cool to know
Gamma Phi will love you
Show you that they care
You won't miss a thing

She shines brighter than a diamonds gleam
Knows her way around the social scene
She'll catch your eye
'Cus she's a Gamma Phi
She is a Greek Queen!
