Want to start your own sorority because you didn't receive a bid during recruitment?

Please don't.

I agree with adpiucf, it really is not the best option. There is A LOT more work that goes into it than meets the eye. First, the sorority chapters on the campus Panhellenic have to see a need to add another sorority. If there is no need, the campus will not open for sorority extension/expansion. There is nothing that can be done beyond that point. Even if the campus did open for expansion, one individual or even a group of individuals will not be able to choose which group they want to colonize and there is no guarantee you will all become members of the new group. The colonizing sorority has to choose you as well during colony recruitment. The process can last quite a long time as well. Also, how really different would the new sorority be from the current groups? Bottom line is: do not start a sorority just because you did not receive a bid during recruitment.

If your only reason for wanting to start a new sorority or fraternity on campus is because you personally didn't receive a bid - then I agree with adpiucf.

But if you see a space, a community, that only a new GLO could address, AND you have several like-minded friends, AND you are willing to put in a lot of time and effort, it's not necessarily a bad idea.

My chapter wouldn't exist were it not for a group of Jewish women at MIT who felt the need for a sorority that addressed Jewish ideals. My sorority wouldn't exist were it not for a group of Jewish women at Barnard who felt the need for a sorority that addressed Jewish ideals.

That said, if you don't have those pieces in place, an attempt to form a local GLO or bring a new national GLO to campus will more than likely wither and die.

Does anyone have an example of an NIC chapter which was started by an unsolicited interest group petitioning the national HQ?

Kevin, do you mean NPC? Because I thought as far as NIC was concerned there were loads of those.
