Brother Robert J. Rogers, Dead at 91

RIP Brother Rogers

Robert J. Rogers, Dead at 91

May 14, 2013

In January of 1990, the Robert J. Rogers Lifetime Service Award was created and presented for the first time. The first recipient of the award was its namesake, Robert J. Rogers, Gamma Theta (North Texas) ’40. The award was intended to honor men such as Rogers who had dedicated many years of selfless service to the Fraternity and its members.

Rogers, a music professor at North Texas, taught piano pedagogy from 1948 to1984. He held degrees from the Julliard School of Music and Columbia Teachers College. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Among his many honors are the University of North Texas Green Glory Award (1985), Denton’s Community Arts Recognition Award (1999) being named a North Texas Outstanding Retiree (2003), and the North Texas Outstanding Alumni Service Award (2012). He was also active as a volunteer and musician in his community.

Rogers was a long-time chapter advisor at Gamma Theta, and was also Province Governor of Province 32 from 1974-1982 and again in 1988. He was responsible for many recruits to the Fraternity, including past National President T. Jervis Underwood, Gamma Theta (North Texas) ’54.

As we celebrate his life, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia mourns the passing of Brother Rogers, who was a true example of the sacrifice and service asked of our members, and whose service to his country, university, chapter, and fellow brothers is a fitting reminder of the noble ideals Sinfonia embodies.
