which frat to join?

I use my aim screenname out of habit. Anyway I am joining a frat next year and am torn between joining Fiji and joining Beta. The reasons are as follows:

Beta: larger so more room for the possibility of conflict to arise (i shall see what happens at the beta beach bash) however they charge 485/month rent (CND) and you get high speed internet, utilities, cable and 2 meals a day 5 times a week. It is wet which is good and bad. I like to drink but must cut down.

fiji: single room is 350/month but no food. Smaller which means less possibility of conflict and is dry which means less oppurtunity for me to be drunk.

I have checked out both frats however met more betas than fijis and I like both frats, both housewse and from what i can see from the members (grads and undergrads) at both frats.

I am a frosh at University of Toronto (0T5) and need to decide by the end of may due to family stuff. Please pass along all advice that you have. Email me, IM me or send me a private message.

Sure, I have some advice:

1) Stop calling fraternities "frats".

2) Don't base your decision on alcohol!

is this even for real?

Yes, it is for real.

I call fraternities frats because it's just an abbreviation. Example of a retreat i went on in HS, Kairos. instead of Karios VI, K6.

Alcohol is just one factor.

The rent package offered by Beta is attractive yet there aren't that many guys at the Fiji chapter here (I think 10 live in the house) and I was just down there today and i met a few people but there are a couple kids I haven't been able to meet and get to know. Ergo fewer kids, in theory, less chance of problems arising in interpersonal relations.

The question in itself of which chapter to join may seem somewhat trivial. However, to me at least, it's a big decision and I'm simply asking for your input and I thank you very much for what you've written.

This is legit and alcohol, like rent and make up of the house, is a factor.

Also, if anyone knows how to reserve a room, that would be much appreciated as i will not be able to contact anyone by phone in Canada from the end of June to the end of August. Whichever place I pledge, i need to be able to know that I will have a room come September.

Cool Frat or Fraternity?

Out of respect for the Greek comunity the Delta Zeta is right...don't call Fraternities "Frat".

You may do what a lot of people do. Wait a year...see what they are involved with.

WHat are their philanthropy events?
What do they have a reputation for?
Are they involved on Campus?
How Strong are they across the nation?

Phi Delta Theta,

Zach

P.S. Love the DZ's

Just a little something I feel should be pointed out-In recruitment, be it for sororities OR fraternities, there is NO guarantee a bid will be extended to ANYONE-even legacies. May I suggest you get a better feel for the brothers you would like to share this relationship with and make sure there is a mutual desire to persue this commitment. You may have more in common with the brothers of another fraternity. You only help yourself if you keep all your options open.

Would you call our country "c*nt" for abbreviation?

here's an idea...

Join the group you like the best!!

So call me old-fashioned, but the only reason I joined Kappa was because that's where I fit in and had a bond with the women. And let me tell you, I was in a house of 25 and had my share of interpersonal problems. Numbers don't count as much as the bond between members...we were the smallest house on campus, and known among not only the Greeks but among the independents for having the best sisterhood.

What happens if Beta goes dry during your tenure? Will you drop out?

nope.. the dry part (no alcohol on site) is something I like.. less temptation for me to drink a lot or sped a good amount of money on booze.

Dry Housing

I live in a dry fraternity house and love it. I think the focus on school, which is our goal during college, is much better that we don't have the distraction to drink in the house. Of course, the brothers go out to the bar and to parties, but it is not a focus of our chapter.
As for what chapter to join, figure out which group of guys you fit in better with, don't let money be the main issue, most chapters can help you work through money issues. The brotherhood is the most important thing.

No response!

Well, I got in touch with the Fiji prez earlier and we finish u exams this week.. I have not heard back from him re: housing (that is the possibilty of housing and such) and I know that there is more to fraternities than simply a house but my parents are based in Guatemala and so I don;t have definite housing for next year. I would love to go to Fiji and I think I have made u my mind for them to be my #1 and beta #2 and if i don;t jin would probably end up going to beta.

I dont want to come off as pestering either here or to the fraternity people here. i don;t have a hell of a lot of social skills but hope to work on that and improve them as well as make a huge contribution whereever I live.
