The worst part is...I think it is the MANAGER'S fault.

She spilled salt on an open box of burgers and reported it to him. He had her and another co-worker "thump the salt off of" the meat AND LEAVE IT THERE TO BE USED, rather than wasting it and taking the hit on his product ratio. (I was a manager YEARS ago in college).

Synagogue seats go for 1.8 million

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/odd_synag...zgTFrBPRntiBIF

Quote:
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Just in time for the Jewish high holidays, two lifetime front-row seats to services at a synagogue here are being auctioned off on eBay. The bidding starts at $1.8 million.

Besides getting to schmooze up front with the rabbi, the lucky winner's family name will be engraved on Seats 1 and 2 of Row 1, Section DD, at Temple Emanu-El. The winner also will receive free parking, two custom-made prayer shawls and yarmulkes, and a hefty tax write-off. Plus, the winning bidder can pass the seats down to his or her children.
"It's a gift that goes from one generation to another," said Rabbi Kliel Rose, who came up with the concept with a little bit of chutzpah and the help of two congregants who work in advertising and marketing.
The auction ends Monday morning, but as of Saturday evening, no one had made a wager. Rose said he wasn't surprised. He said the auction was more about gaining the attention of Jews who are disconnected from their faith.
"It has very little to do with the money," Rose said. "Hypothetically, if the money comes, it would be great, but the idea was really just to be edgy."
Temple Emanu-El is a 1,400-seat conservative congregation that was founded in the 1940s on South Beach. It had thousands of members in its heyday, but the temple shrunk to a little more than 200 families by the time Rose arrived two years ago.
(This version CORRECTS the time the auction ends to Monday morning.)

dopey thieves steal woman's dwarfs

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070910/...Q5TrCGHh3tiBIF

Quote:
FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Some dopey thieves snatched and grabbed several of Sue Austin's seven dwarfs. "I'm thinking it's just some kids," said the Flint Township resident, who is offering a "no questions asked" reward for the return of the statues.

Stolen from Austin's display are Grumpy, a 2 1/2-foot concrete statue, along with Snow White, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey. On Sunday, following an anonymous tip to Austin, Dopey was found in a front yard in nearby Davison Township.
Each statue weighs more than 200 pounds, which might be why the thieves decided to leave behind Sleepy, Happy and Doc, The Flint Journal recently reported.
Austin said she saw a similar display about 10 years ago and liked it so much that her husband bought the statues.

skip work, make babies governor says

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/russia_se...7YAxpfCCbtiBIF

Quote:
ULYANOVSK, Russia (Reuters) - The governor of a central Russian province urged couples to skip work Wednesday and make love instead to help boost Russia's low birth-rate.

And if a woman gives birth in exactly nine months time -- on Russia's national day on June 12 -- she will qualify for a prize, perhaps even winning a new home.
"It's normally something for the home -- a fridge or a television set," Yelena Yakovleva at the Ulyanovsk regional administration press office, said.
"It doesn't matter if it's a girl or a boy."
Newly-weds Karina and Anton Bukhanovsky walked hand in hand down the main street of the regional capital of Ulyanovsk. They live in St Petersburg but traveled to Ulyanovsk to soak up the atmosphere Wednesday.
"I used to live here," said Karina, aged 19.
"We plan to come back on the same day next year and try for a baby and the prize nine months later," she said.
Anton, aged 21, kissed her gently on the cheek and they strolled off arm in arm.
Regional governor Sergei Morozov told employers to contribute to a Kremlin campaign to boost the birth rate by giving couples Wednesday off to have sex.
Russia wants to reverse a trend in which the population is shrinking by about 700,000 people a year as births fail to outpace a high death rate boosted by AIDS, alcoholism and suicide.
This is the third year Ulyanovsk region, famous as the birthplace of Soviet state founder Vladimir Lenin, has dedicated a day to encouraging couples to produce more babies.
Prizes will extend equally to unwed women who produce children on the right day, though the biggest prizes will go to married couples.
On Russia Day this year, a family won a jeep after their fourth baby was born on the holiday.
Next year, the top prizes will include an apartment, Morozov told Reuters. "We need more people," he said.
This year a record 78 babies were born on June 12 at the main hospital in the regional capital of Ulyanovsk, beating the 2006 total of 26, said chief doctor Andrei Malykh.
"The scheme is working. People want the prizes," he said.

"dead" man wakes up under autopsy knife

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/autopsy_d...uULwkMcpHtiBIF

Quote:
CARACAS (Reuters) - A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realize something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.
"I woke up because the pain was unbearable," Camejo said, according to a report on Friday in leading local newspaper El Universal.
His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband's body only to find him moved into a corridor -- and alive.
Reuters could not immediately reach hospital officials to confirm the events. But Camejo showed the newspaper his facial scar and a document ordering the autopsy.

too much internet is bad for your health

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/oukoe_uk_...rhJh_T9cjtiBIF

Quote:
BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese man dropped dead after playing Internet games for three consecutive days, state media said on Monday as China seeks to wean Internet addicts offline.

The man from the southern boomtown of Guangzhou, aged about 30, died on Saturday after being rushed to the hospital from the Internet cafe, local authorities were quoted by the Beijing News as saying.
"Police have ruled out the possibility of suicide," the newspaper said, adding that exhaustion was the most likely cause of death. It did not say what game he was playing.
China, worried about the spread of pornography and politically incorrect content, has banned the opening of new cybercafes this year and issued orders limiting the time Internet users can spend playing online.
In April, President Hu Jintao launched a campaign to rid the Internet of "unhealthy" content and make it a platform for Communist Party doctrine.

mystery illness strikes after meteorite hits peruvian village

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070918...QlpO60d1jq188F
Quote:
LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.
Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.
Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.
Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.
"Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said.

someone tries to sell Belgium on Ebay

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070918/...tURqO_3GrtiBIF
Quote:
BRUSSELS, Belgium - Hidden among the porcelain fox hounds and Burberry tablecloths on sale at eBay.be this week was an unusual item: "For Sale: Belgium, a Kingdom in three parts ... free premium: the king and his court (costs not included)."

The odd ad was posted by one disgruntled Belgian in protest at his country's political crisis which reached a 100-day landmark Tuesday with no end in sight to the squabbling between Flemish and Walloon politicians.
"I wanted to attract attention," said Gerrit Six, the teacher and former journalist who posted the ad. "You almost have to throw rock through a window to get attention for Belgium."
Six placed the advertisement on Saturday, offering free delivery, but pointing out that the country was coming secondhand and that potential buyers would have to take on over $300 billion (euro220 billion) in national debt.
Like many of Belgium's 10 million citizens, Six is exasperated that the power struggle between the county's French- or Dutch-speaking political parties has left Belgium in political limbo since June 10 elections.
Demands for more autonomy from the Dutch-speaking Flemish are resisted by the French-speaking Walloons, making it impossible to form a government coalition and triggering concern the kingdom is on the verge of a breakup.
Six decided to vent his frustration through the Internet ad.
"My proposal was to make it clear that Belgium was valuable, it's a masterpiece and we have to keep it," he told Associated Press Television News. "It's my country and I'm taking care of it, and with me are millions of Belgians."
Six' idea got a mixed reaction on the streets of Brussels.
"Very funny, typical Belgian humor," said Anne Graux. "It's ridiculous," snapped Nathalie Ginot, a Brussels resident who had her own pragmatic solution to Belgium's woes. "We think it would be good to split Belgium into the three and make Brussels a tax-haven, a capital exempt from all taxes," she said hopefully.
Six vaunted Belgium's attractions to potential buyers from art nouveau architecture to the headquarters of NATO and the European Union and some great beers. But he also warned of the pitfalls of taking on the cacophonous mix of Flemish nationalists, Walloon Socialists and the mayors of all 19 Brussels' boroughs.
EBay was happy to take Six' advertisement.
"It was a really fun listing made by a Belgian," Peter Burin, PR manager of eBay Belgium. "This person, in a very funny way, reminded the Belgians what a great country Belgium actually is and it would be a shame to sell it."
However, the company decided to pull the add Tuesday after receiving a bid of euro10 million ($14 million)
"We decided to take it down, just to avoid confusion," he told APTN.

From the Today show....
A 13-year-old "catwalk" international model from Australia. The dear baby who had more makeup on than I've worn at several formals, says she believes that if you can do a job (a job at 13), then she ought to be allowed to strut wearing what she choses. She says she doesn't do swimwear, but then they showed her in a swimwear shot. And of course, she had the classic stage mother. That's right, ma, send your baby out into a world known for eating disorders, drug use, wild parties. Hmmm, could it be the fame, the paycheck? What next, toddler models not walking deemed too old when they can stand? Jance Dickerson (sp probably wrong), described by her herself as the world's first supermodel, requires her agency models to be 18, high school grads.
At 13, my parents would have flipped had I dressed 10 years older. I bought a bikini at 14 that probably sent a record for a quick return to the store--my mother told me to find the rest of the suit, or return the scraps. Yes, I know everybody is doing things younger now, but then what does that leave when you allegedly are mature? This one hit me wrong.
