Has anyone seen any modern cakes with columns?

I personally don't like the look of columns, and I know they are a bit dated. But my fiance really, really wants a tall cake, and says that it *must* have columns. It's seriously the only thing that he really wants for the wedding as far as decor/design goes. I figured that since there's so many creative things that can be done with cakes that it would be possible to get a cake with columns, but still have it look modern. What I don't want is a super frilly, dated looking cake, like this:

Ick.

If anyone has modern looking cakes with columns, please share! I'd love some inspiration. I did a Google search but this was all I found:

This is kind of what I'm looking for, but just not as plain.

Still mostly traditional though a lot cleaner than a lot of the other pics I saw with columns

there's something holding this one up:

And this one's different too, though not columns per se

So mostly no, I don't see a lot :-/

A lot of the column cakes I'm finding have the "in between" area decorated with flowers or something so you don't actually SEE the columns. i'm not sure if that's what you are looking for.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know, there's no column cakes anywhere...and I tried to tell him that it's an out of date look, but he doesn't care, lol

I like that first one, Drole. The roses take away from the columns, but you can still see them, so he'd like that. Violet, both of those are pretty (that first one is really cool!) but he's really set on these frickin' columns.

No, I really don't get it either, lol

Anywho, thanks for the pics, I'm getting some ideas...

My friends' wedding was featured on Cake Wrecks last year. I think he sent in the picture! It was a pretty funny cake, and tasty too!

Speaking of cakes with columns, I hit the flowergirl circuit pretty hard back in the early 80s. During one wedding, the tallest groomsman, who was the escort of my aunt, fainted during the ceremony and rolled down the steps of the chapel. My aunt took me and we walked up the aisle together afterwards. The groomsman ended up being fine.

It comes to pass that they had a whole scene involving the bridal party figurines walking down stairs. It was, needless to say, a very elaborate cake. My aunt took one of the male figurines and was like, "hey, D! It's you!," and re-created the fainting down the stairs. 25 years later, I still get a good laugh about that one.

I know how you feel. My fiance insisted on having his whole groom's party wear ascots, so now I'm looking for some that don't scream 1991.

Ascots just make me think of Fred from Scooby Doo.

LOL

Don't get me started on the tux thing. First he said he wanted to make his best man wear a cummerbund so that he "looks like an idiot" (although he partially kidding...if it wasn't as something as important as our wedding he'd be all for it though). Then we were watching America's Funniest Videos and there was a wedding clip where the groom was wearing a white jacket and black pants. He thought it was a good look.

I shot both those down immediately.

So much facepalm. No wonder the guy wears a t-shirt and basketball shorts 70% of the time.

I thought this was interesting.

I really like the use of flowers to kind of hide the columns.

One of my sisters was married in a church without air conditioning. One of her bridesmaids fainted, knocked down the American flag, the pole of which hit another bridesmaid smack dab in the face. The person next to me said, "I've been wanting to do that for years!"

I had a cousin who got married in a church with no air conditioning and one of the groom's men passed out
