Positive news article about Pike
Here's the link: http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/con...ikebounce.html
and here's the text in case anyone can't open the link...
A University of Dayton fraternity has found a unique and tiring way to honor the Dayton vs. Xavier rivalry and raise money for a Dayton medical center.
On Feb. 8, just four days before the big game, the Pi Kappa Alphas will drive to Xavier University and return to Dayton in about eight hours, the amount of time it takes to run the 46.5 miles between the two. The third annual Pike Bounce will see about 50 fraternity brothers taking turns bouncing a basketball from Cincinnati to Dayton to raise money for the Victor J. Cassano Health Center, 165 Edwin C. Moses Blvd.
"We try to connect the rivalry with the event and the ball is a symbol for the event itself," UD senior Jonathon Whaley said. "Cassano is a great organization, they provide health care for impoverished families in Dayton."
Cassano has about 25,000 patient visits a year and services include obstetrics/gynecology, neurology and educational programs, said Kelly Fackle, Grandview Foundation vice president for development. The Pikes hope to donate $15,000 to Cassano, which usually runs about $2.5 million in the red, Whaley said.
"I think not many people take on a big endeavor like this, like our fraternity has," he said. "So when [people] hear about it, they go out of their way to help."
Donations can be made payable to Pi Kappa Alpha and any cash amount can be mailed to Pike Bounce for Charity, 102 Lawnview, Dayton, OH 45409.
