The first annual Greek Date Auction successfully raised $3,350 for Habitat for Humanity, with the highest bid on host Lynn Kim for $450.
Students gathered on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 7 in Illinois Room with one question on their mind: "Where is the love?"
This question was also the theme of the first annual Greek Date Auction held at UIC, and judging by the large turnout and hundreds of dollars bid, many students found the answer that night.
The auction was hosted by the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority and the Theta Xi fraternity and raised money for Habitat for Humanity.
Of the 28 Greek organizations at UIC, 21 participated by submitting at least one member of their organization to be put up for auction making a total of 29 people auctioned off.
Many arrived at 6 p.m. to register for bidding and were each given a numbered plate. The auction itself started at 7 p.m. with over 400 people present.
Representatives Lynn Kim and JD Harwell from Alpha Sigma Tau and Theta Xi hosted the show that evening.
Before each of the auctioned persons came on the stage, a short video clip of each person describing their ideal date was played for all of the bidders to see.
Then, the auctioned person strutted on the stage and told the bidders a little bit about themselves.
The bidding started at $15, but the lowest bid that night was $25. The total revenue earned from bids alone was $3,150, including the highest bid of $450 for host Lynn Kim.
There was also a donation jar at the entrance to the Illinois Room that accumulated $200, leaving the total profit for the night to be $3,350.
The proceeds were split in half between the two hosting Greek organizations.
Alpha Sigma Tau will be sending a check directly to Habit for Humanity. Theta Xi is using the money to fund Spring Break trip to go to New Orleans and help build a home for a family who was a victim of Hurricane Katrina and has not had a home for one and a half years.
As a part of the auction, those who were auctioned off will be accompanied by their highest bidder to the UIC Valentine's Ball that will be held on Friday, Feb. 16 in the East Terrace.
A portion of the proceeds from the auction is being used to fund a group dinner for all of the bidders and their dates and immediately after everyone will go to the ball.
"At UIC I feel that Greeks don't have the most popular reputation. So we wanted to show that Greek organizations can come together and work for a great cause," said Lynn Kim, a fourth year marketing major and publicist for the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority.
Kim made a proposal to the LAS Alumni Association, who gave her $500 to put on the show.
So Kim, along with Jon D. Harwell, a UIC alumnus, and Craig Conrad, DJ from Defiant Mobile Entertainment put a great amount of work into putting the night together.
"Originally the money was to go toward paying the DJ," said Kim.
However, Conrad did not charge for his services that night so that the $500 could go towards other expenses that night.
"We worked really hard especially over the last four weeks. The creative genius behind the show was really JD and Craig Conrad," said Kim.
As far as the possibility for making a second annual Greek Date auction next year, Kim said, "Definitely. It is our goal that it becomes an ongoing yearly event at UIC. We are definitely hoping to plan one for next year."
