$60,000 missing at SK - KU

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Sixty-one thousand dollars has disappeared from the Sigma Kappa sorority at the University of Kansas.

Lawrence police are investigating and are talking to a woman who used to handle the sorority's books. No one has been arrested or charged.

A treasurer, who is not a student, noticed money missing when she began her two-year term in November. A sorority official called police Friday, and an officer was sent to examine the books this week.

Wow, $60,000, how does a group have that kind of money. My organization is so poor.

Good luck to them as they try to resolve it, that is a terrible misfortune.

I actually heard about this a few minutes before I read your post, and I'm so sad for them!! That sucks!! And to think that somebody that was actually a sister could've done it is horrible!! I mean, what are sisters for?? If it was a sister and she really needed the money that bad, she could've said something - - I'm sure her sisters everywhere would've been more than happy to help out!!!!!!! Geesh.

It happens more often than you'd think!! How could the treasurer not be a student?? I'm confused on that one.

Didn't somebody else already post a thread on this? As I recall, the treasurer wasn't a student because she is an alumna member of the housing corp board or something like that. The missing money didn't have to do with collegiate chapter ops, but the housing board.

$61,000 is a lot of money. That's a down payment on a house or a few years of school. I hope that they get the money back.

Red face

This happened several moths ago, so is old news! Nothing has been reported since about who did it or if restitution has been made and criminal charges filed!

Angry That blows!

It being the corp board makes sense, I mean w/ the treasurer not being a student. The only thing i could think of was that it was the treasurer's advisor that noticed. That could easily be a years worth of dues for a chapter. I hope it was not a sister that embezeled it. That would be even worse.

I am the new treasurer advisor for my chapter and that is totally my worst fear!

Despicable! I've seen this happen before, in the mid 1980's the Acacia Chapter at UT-Austin had their Educational Foundation rifled by an Alum, he was an attorney, very prominent in Austin , he was ultimately disbarred and put on probation. Ultimately Acacia went inactive at UT , the embezzlement may have helped knock down the chapter.
