Lightbulb Hypothetical Online Sorority

I randomly found some archived discussions about an online sorority.

It got me thinking, in our current society of social media and technology, one would think that there would be a successful online sorority.

I thought it would be interesting to discuss what this type of GLO would look like. How would it operate? Recruit? Hold meetings/rituals?

I am just surprised there hasn't been one by now. And if there is one (pardon me if I am wrong and they exist), how have they not been heard of? You would think that an online sorority would be able to reach out to more women--even those living in rural areas.

Oh Lort.

There have been many attempts at starting a group from scratch and keeping everything "online." I'm pretty sure I've even seen the conversation on here with a member, and creeping their Facebook page. Some have even existing for a year or more. This isn't a new idea.

Beta Sigma Phi sees success online because they were a pre-existing, successful organization.

Speaking as a Beta Sigma Phi in an online chapter AND a physical land chapter:

I'm not the biggest fan of the online format. I like to interact in real time and real life with my sisters, so while I love my online chapter and the sisters in it....it's not the preferred way of sorority life for me. I know many sisters who love it, because there are no land chapters in their area and their friends and the ladies that they know IRL aren't interested in sororities land based or otherwise. So, their online chapters are the best way for them to stay involved and connected.

I've had a good number of my personal friends who are also my sisters who have tried online chapters and aren't fans either for the same reasons as my own.

Interesting! I didn't know there were online chapters!

It would seem very true that the success may come from being well established!

misscherrypie-- Does the online chapter hold rush events? How does the chapter go about attracting new members?

Good questions!

Online chapters don't seem to Rush the way that land ones do. I was asked to rush my online chapter by a close friend who was also a Beta, and then got to meet her chapter sisters by emailing back and forth with them over time.

Then, in many cases (mine counted) a prospective member will attend the meetings of the online chapter for a specified period of time and in some fashion, the prospective member is either offered or not offered membership in that chapter. Each chapter is different and not all chapters accept brand new members to the sorority. Some do. There is a lot of variation.

In my experience, new members have been introduced to the online chapter by someone that they already know in the chapter who invites them to rush. Not to say that some online chapters would never attempt to attract rushees in to rush without a prior connection to someone in the chapter, but I've personally never seen this happen.
