Totally agree. The less said the better. All you do is tell the mother something that might hurt her feelings. This is done sooo badly so many times because people get diarrhea of the mouth and feel the need to explain. Are you really going to be able to "explain" to a sister why her daughter/sister/grand daughter just isn't cut out to be an XYZ? Yeah, No. Just keep it short and simple. I've even seen, "She didn't have the grades." turn into a war when the alum didn't think it through that keeping the legacy past the first party was leading the girl on. Shut up and get off the phone.

Yup. I had to make some of these calls last year. I actually wrote down what I wanted to say before I even made the call (which is pretty much what I said above). I didn't have any Moms or sisters ask too many questions, but if they do, then it just becomes an "I'm sorry, I can't discuss membership selection with you".
