Probate / Coming Out Shows

Its that time of year... or semester for that matter..

Made me wonder... Probate/Coming Out shows are generally a BGLO thing

I've seen several Minority (hispanic/latino) GLOs also doing shows...

do BGLOs take offense as this could be considered a NPCH tradition?

and do mainstraim GLOs have shows like this at all around the country? is tehre a special way to reveal pledge classes/lines?

i dont think any PHC sorority or NIC fraternity has anything like that. We just have initiation, which is members only, because it involves secret ritual

That may be an overstatement. There are a number of campuses where pledge presents -- ceremonies where pledges are officially introduced as new members -- are a big deal for panhellenic sororities.

Obviously, this isn't the same thing as a probate show, but it IS a ceremonial public declaration of the pledges' affiliation, and an opportunity for the whole campus to see who joined where, not a secret ritual.

I know that here at UNT (University of North Texas) that our cousins, Sigma Lamba Beta and Sigma Lamba Gamma (Latin/Hispanic) have the crossing jackets. All NPHC organization probate and may I say that this Fall 'o5 line, Blue Flames of Virtue, of that "Devastating" Rho Delta chapter had the krunkest probate! LOL!

From what I have read in other discussions about this, the issue is broader than neophyte/coming out shows. It is the whole issue of stepping being a NPHC tradition.

Personally, I don't care if non-NPHCers step ( and I have seen videos of NIC and NPC orgs stepping.) But I know for many NPHC members it is a concern. Especially now that there are high school step teams, church step teams, gang step teams (j/k, I think,) etc.

BTW, Probate show is an old and now incorrect term, but that is a whole 'nother discussion.

But you are right, the concept behind them are still the same--just different formats. Introducing the new members to the campus.

When I was a collegian, my chapter held a Presents Ceremony each Fall. Here, each pledge (as we were still called then) was presented to the Greek and campus community.

Families, other Greeks, and campus officials were invited to the event. We had fraternity brothers escort the young ladies as she was presented. Her name and hometown was read as she was introduced to the community. The member usually got leis and/or flowers at this time as well.

It was also here that I got my "alum chum". As if having a sister-mother wasn't enough, the alum chum was the icing on the cake! We were spoiled rotten!

Pupus and light refreshments were served after the ceremony and the girls were often congratulated in an advertisement the chapter took out in the campus newspaper the following Monday.

It wasn't until after a few semesters later that I found out that Presents wasn't an official Alpha Gam ceremony and that not all Alpha Gam chapters had it. Turns out that it was a regional thing done on a few campuses, carried over to ours by a wonderful sister from UCLA.

Alpha Phi Alpha (Omicron Rho chapter) just had their probate show at Otterbein. The chapter has also taught several of the local groups how to step in the past. Then again, we don't have specific formal "coming out" events...although I wish we did. Not necessarily to step, but a little Greek celebration would be pretty cool. Problem is that that the pledge periods are all over the board. Our girls are active before spring break (6 week pledge period), as are the pledges of 2 other groups. The others have 8 and 9 week programs if everything goes according to plan. The boys...oh the boys. Some are 6, some are 4 or 5, some are closer to 12. It would make for an interesting show.

I got kind of paranoid. But not from watching the clip. I think I left my stove on. And I only needed that to light a hand rolled cigar.

Anyway, I thought they were going to spin those torch/pole things they had in their hands and then stroll off the stage or something.
