Do you teach the spelling of the Greek Letters?

Pretty much every pledging/new members/etc. program that I've seen has included the greek alphabet. I'm wondering if the spelling of the greek letters in Greek is taught. For example the fact that Y is spelled YΨΙΛΟΝ as rather than something like YΠΣΙΛΩΝ (or even the fact that the Y when spelled out is actually ΎΨΙΛΟΝ (with an acute accent on the Upsilon). My fraternity didn't and I'm wondering if any do...

I think we do well to get them to learn the English spellings.

Also, what is the point? Knowing what the letters are is important, but I can't see any conceivable reason for knowing how to spell them in Greek.

LOL - I learned the Greek alphabet in Sixth Grade! We had a teacher from LSU, and I am firmly sure that Mrs. Bridges was in a sorority, although I'm not sure which one.

We didn't learn the Greek spelling, but we could say the alphabet both forwards and backwards!

Backwards would be useful to a Chi Omega member! Over twenty years since I’ve joined, and the chapter naming convention still confuses me.

Some Fraternities & Sororities have the Spelling of their Greek Letters as part of their Coat of Arms, so I would imagine that at least at the start it might be useful for the members

I remember a time when lots of GCers liked to put spell out the names of their GLOs in their signatures—in Greek. I lost count of how many times I saw Alpha as ΑΛΠΗΑ instead of ΑΛΦΑ. I even seem to remember one SAE who tried to spell out Phi Alpha as ΠΗΙ ΑΛΠΗΕ.

Not sure why the Epsilon in the mispelling of ALPHA

But I got 22,800 hits on "Αλπηα" *sigh*

That would be a typo on my part, which I've corrected.
Alas, the ΠΗ in place of Φ was not a typo.

And oh, how I wish it was... I've also seen Upsilon spelled out starting with Upsilon Pi Sigma...

And any of the letters that rhyme with Eta, have an Eta as their first vowel, not an Epsilon.

No ,but in our chapter we ALWAYS had to recite the alphabet beginning with Pi, Kappa, Alpha. Not sure if other Pike chapters followed that practice.
