Trying to start a sorority on campus.. NEED HELP!!

I would like to start a sorority on my college campus. There are a couple on campus. Our college is growing and I feel as if our Greek Life needs to grow as well. I have been trying to figure out where I can get information and I have tried to look for some books but I have yet to get any information! Can anyone help me and point me in the right direction!??

1. Read the threads here. Search function is your friend.

2. What kind of sorority are you interested in? NPC, NPHC, local, service?

3. Are the other sororities NPC, NPHC, local?

4. Have you gone through recruitment yet?

I am interested in NPC. I have researched lots of different sororities and based on what values I want and live by and theirs I have narrowed it down to a few. There are other NPC sororities on my campus, we do have a greek life, I just feel a new chapter with new ideas and values will interest more girls to find out what greek life is all about. This is just an idea.. I have not gone through recruitment. I just have no idea where to start, but Im willing to work hard because I feel it will be soo worth it!

Go through recruitment first.

If you want to bring a new group to campus, you'll need to get the approval of the existing sororities and if you don't go through rush first, you're pretty much saying "I didn't check you guys out, but I'm pretty sure you suck and what I have is better." This will not endear you to the present sororities.

Also, are all the sororities at total? Have quotas been increasing from year to year? What is the housing situation? How is retention overall? Are many women going unbid? You need to know these things before going forward with a new group.

I agree with everything 33 said. A new sorority can't come to campus until the campus decides to expand. Go talk to the Director of Greek Life at your university. If there is no such person, there should be a Dean of Student Activities who oversees all of the student organizations. You can address your concerns with him/her.

Although, you have not yet been through recruitment so you really are not qualified to say that the existing sororities don't meet your needs. You need to give yourself and the sororities an opportunity to meet before making a snap judgment like that.

Starting a sorority is an extremely time-consuming endeavor. Even with the minimum start-up requirements met it can take years for a sorority to colonize on your campus-- long after you have packed up and gone off to the real world.

College is 4 years (give or take a year) of your life-- see what opportunities currently exist at the university and get involved with them before you try to bring something brand-new. You can channel your time and effort into being a great student and helping build an existing organization further; rather than struggling with an uphill battle to bring a new organization into being.

She wants to start a chapter of an existing NPC sorority that's not already at her school. (Even though she hasn't even gone through NPC recruitment to check out the ones her school already has)

A vice president of the inter/national sorority told you that?

As has already been said, the campus would first need to decide to expand. Then the group you want would have to decide that they want to be at that campus. They could very well decide that they don't want to be there.

Then you have to go through the proper process.

But yes, I would agree with Alpha Frog that you should change your user name.

Please - change your name.

That said - follow all the good advice you have been given on this thread. You may wish to start a local sorority - when and if your campus opens up for expansion, you might then be in a position to have input on which NPC is asked to come on campus.

Good luck -

That name's a bit too pretentious, don't you think?
