Every Chapter of DG EVER! (NEW)

Currently active: 145 Chapters

I wanted to keep this list going and accurate because we have gathered so much great information thus far. Please help me keep this list current! Here's what we have so far:

The additional information 'L' represents that a local petitioned DG, followed by the date the local was founded. The last, single number indicates DG's entry to the campus. (i.e., /2 means DG second NPC on campus. If no local petitioned, there will be a date to indicate when NPC came to the campus.

Thanks for this! I'm using some of this info on a fraternity history presentation that I'll be giving to my local alumnae group...interesting to see the travels of DG. Especially the jump from MS/TN to Indiana, where it goes Westward so quickly. I would've predicted that it would go South.

The early Anchoras (many available on Google Books now) chart the expansion. In one of the earliest available chapter news sections [March 1885 Anchora], the Psi girls in Oxford complain that "we are in measure, cut off from the other chapters, so that there can be between us no firm clasp of hands, no interchange of sisterly greeting, save through the pen..." It's credited to Psi-University of Missouri, but I think that's a typo. They mention "us Oxford girls" and an exhibition in New Orleans.

There's a lot of detailed history in those old ANCHORAS that hasn't made it into the history book. Just not room to get it all in there, I guess. (Do we still have a history book?) It's not even on the DG website!
Somehow I stumbled onto a bit of history of Fairmount College, where DG had its second chapter, Theta. It only lasted 3 years, 1877-80.
Fairmount was a girls school in Monteagle TN, which you may know is very close to Sewanee, where the University of the South is located. Mrs. Louise Yerger and Mrs. Harriet Kells moved their girls' school from Jackson, Miss., to Mont Eagle Mountain in 1872.
I'll post some more background on the college and Delta Gamma's short tenure there as I dig.

Excuse the swerve, ladies! I have been reading...I love fraternity history. It seems before the 30s chapters chose there own names a la AOIIs tradition. I actually see several repeated names. Is that correct? Can you elaborate on that history?

AOII Angel, you are correct. In the early days, chapters selected their own designations representing special meaning to themselves. Designations could not repeat unless the previous chapter closed (as with our 3 Delta chapters...after the 3rd Delta chapter closed, no other chapter ever took the Delta designation as it became kind of a bad luck myth -- no maybe it wasn't a myth!).

Very cool. Do your chapter names still have special meanings?

They do...although of course the meaning is part of each chapter's ritual . For a little tidbit that's in public record, I know Phi I/Phi Alpha chapter chose its name at least in part because George Banta, a Phi Delta Theta, helped bring Delta Gamma to that university. But we've been going (mostly) in alphabetical order since Alpha Beta in 1912. Interestingly enough, that roughly coincides with the beginning of "professionalization" of sororities, requirements of recommendations from alumnae, and organized, nationwide alumnae coordination of fraternity business. Before that coordination had been nationwide but usually somewhat haphazard.

AOII Angel, have you read the book Bound by a Mighty Vow? It's definitely an academic, not casual read, but it has some great insights into the development of women's fraternities and what they meant to the first three generations of young women who participated in them from 1870s-1910s. It draws mostly from Kappa Alpha Theta's archives, but the insights would apply for most women's fraternities at the time.

Sorry for the threadjack! I just love history .

I have read parts of it. I found it fascinating. The fraternal movement was essential to the success of early female students. Thanks for the explanation. AOIIs submottos are open ritual. We'll tell you the meanings of all of them. It's nice to know another group has a similar tradition.

As Lehigh is no longer listed on the chapter locator on deltagamma.org, I have updated the chapter's status on the master list. I do not know the founding date for the Lehigh chapter, so if someone knows that, please let me know.
