Well I'm not sure how relevant this may be, but when TCU approved bringing GLO's to campus in 1955-56, 10 sororities and 8 fraternities all came at practically the same time. Imagine how competitive recruiting was for all the organizations and how confused all the kids going through rush must have been....they really didn't have much to base their decision off of.

I visited the ASA colony at Frostburg University last fall. They are now an installed chapter, but during their colonization, I am pretty confident that at least one other colony was present.
It may be important to know that both colonies were absorbed locals. I'm not sure if that fact would be more or less confusing to PNMs.

Armstrong Atlantic State added Tri Sigma and AST at the same time in 2004. Last year, Penn College added Tri Sigma and ASA at the same time also. UT-Tyler added Gamma Phi, DG, and one other org that escapes me at once in 2004 or 2005. These were all new Greek systems though. It just depends on what the school thinks is best.

Alpha Chi Omega was the 3rd sorority at UT-Tyler.
University of Arkansas-Fort Smith added Delta Gamma and Gamma Phi Beta at the same time when they started their Greek system. The fraternities added were Kappa Alpha and Sigma Nu (UAFS) and Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Pi Kappa Phi (UTTyler).

This was how I rushed at Pepperdine. There were seven sorority colonies (one more came later). It was no more confusing to us than it would have been at any other school - to freshmen, any and all chapters are new.

Brand-new Greek systems generally add more than one colony at once. One of our chapters was the only sorority (I think they might have been the only Greek org, period) on their campus for quite a long time and I always thought that would be kind of odd.
Larger housed Greek systems usually do not and there's usually a lag of at least a year to make sure the new colony is going to pan out and that there wasn't just a random bump (from a higher than usual enrollment, larger percentage of female students or things like that) in rush numbers. You are sinking beaucoup bucks into that and the last thing you want is to get to a campus where the rush numbers plummet.
Like Peppy said - I don't think it confuses PNMs. They tend to like who they like. Maybe some don't want the extra work of a colony, but if everyone is doing the same thing you really don't have a choice.

UC Merced had three sorority colonies because they had a brand new Greek system. Delta Gamma, Tri Delta, and Kappa were all installed within a week or two of each other. I'm not quite sure how they did recruitment, but I think they held some events together.
Ahhh I'm dying to know if they decided anything for Stanford! I'm gonna ask around...

I e-mailed my contact there, and of course, she's out of the country with limited e-mail connection until January. Ummm...no!! Further levels of creeping required? Probably.

Kappa Sigma is being formally recognized at FGCU. This will begin with the spring semester. It's great to see this finally happen.
