Casting Call for Good Times, The Movie

In case you have not read the Innnnnn the News thread at AKA forum . . .

Posted by DeleGirl:

Found this on the Velvet Rope Website:

Looks like the greenlight is on for the Tim Story-directed big-screen movie adaptation of the 1970's sitcom "Good Times". Yes, Black people, I said, "GOOD TIMES"! And every African-American actor seems to be salivating to work on this film that is looking to be a real hoot (and why not? When I heard of this project, I thought "instant hit. Every Black person in America from 20-45 grew up on this show"). As I type this, Cedric The Entertainer is inking to play Bookman. Every Wayans brother and sister wants a part of this. Angela Bassett (believe it or not) is in talk for the Esther Rolle role ("DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!"). And who has expressed fervent interest in playing the part of sexy, nosey, single neighbor Willona? None other than.. Janet Jackson (the former Penny)! The film is also supposed to have tons of cameos from A-list Black actors playing colorful hoodrats from the projects... Halle Berry, Sam Jackson, etc. And speaking of ghetto hoodrats, Whitney Houston is being courted to sing the theme song ("just looking out of the window / Watching my Afro grow" ... how serendipitous is that?

They mentioned possibly Chris Rock or Dave Chapelle for J.

Who would you cast?

I pick Anthony Anderson for Bookman and Samuel L. Jackson for James Evans, Sr.

Anthony Andersen would make a good "Bookman"

I've got to think about the rest....

Dave Chapelle for JJ.

Kyla Pratt could play Penny.

Sanaa Lathan could play Thelma.

Smile

I would love to see Anthony Anderson as Bookman. I would like to see Dave Chappelle as JJ. That would be funny.

I know. I have to think of another young AA actress.

Ving Rhames - I think he would do a good job as daddy James.

Wink

Hmmmm...... let's see....

Definitely Anthony Andersen for Bookman

Dave Chapelle as JJ

Sanaa Lathan or Vanessa L. Williams (Soul Food) or Malinda Williams as Thelma or the original actress

Kyla Pratt as Penny

Khalil Kain as Michael (I just like Khalil) or Larenz Tate as Michael

Angela Bassett as Florida

John Amos as James ()

Theresa Randle as Wilona

and Leon can be "My name is Lennnae, do you have a Pennnae..."

That's all I can think of right now

After talking about this all day with folks on my listserve and just general thoughts, here I go (this is SO MUCH EASIER to cast than THe Coldest Winter Ever)

Anthony Anderson -- Bookman
Ving Rhames -- James Evans Sr.
Dave Chapelle -- JJ
Michael Ealy -- Michael
Sanaa Lathan -- Thelma
Kyla Pratt -- Penny
Loretta Devine -- Florida
LL Cool J -- Keith
Alderman -- Bernie Mac
Ned the wino -- John Witherspoon

PLEASE DO NOT PUT A WAYANS in a key role.

Bernie Mac as Alderman - that would be sooooo hilarious.

Leon can play Lenny.

Jenifer - there ya go!!! She's very sassy and will cuss somebody out in a heartbeat - just like Wilona used to.

Good pick CT4.
