Here is one from the Dallas paper today that handled it well:

The bride graduated from The Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with an AB in Fine Arts from Harvard University. While at Harvard, Margaret served as captain of the Women's Varsity Golf Team and was an officer in Kappa Alpha Theta. She earned an MFA in architectural history from the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. She is now the director of the Roberts Retail Group at KW Commercial in Tucson.
The groom graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. He attended the University of Arizona and is now a private real estate investor in Tucson.

The Birmingham News still lists Greek affiliations and debutante affiliations in engagement announcements. Same for The Times-Picayune in NOLA, which incidentally publishes an entire special section for debutante season (summer through Mardi Gras).

ETA: Something else quaint that The Times-Picayune does is list the mother of the bride's maiden name.

But welcome to the high streamlined and cut-back world of print journalism. Our newspaper used to print engagement and wedding announcements for free, but we would write them. I would cut the heck out of the gown description (only mama and bride care about that), but always ask if the bride and groom were Greek. Biographical detail only went in the engagement announcement...unless the couple had no engagement announcement. AND I would write it to say they ARE a member of their fraternity.
But since our newspaper went to paid notices, most only print one announcement....if at all.
With couples living together without benefit of matrimony....when brides want to have the baby first so they can then fit into their wedding dress...we're lucky two have even 1 announcement in the Sunday papers now.
Women want to have the baby first so they can fit into the wedding dress? That's news to me...

My hometown paper used to post wedding and engagement announcements, and I'm pretty sure Greek affiliation was included. Because the local publisher was acquired by a national publisher, a lot of the local-interest articles have gone away in favor of more advertisements and paid notices. I bet that's happening in a lot of small towns and cities around the country.

Instead of a shotgun wedding while they're pregnant.

The mother's maiden name thing doesn't sound like a great idea with all of the security questions, etc. that use mother's maiden name. I think it's considered PII now.
