Question vandy rush

Hey guys. I'm a first time poster but I'm curious about Vandy rush. I'm a freshman there this year, and from what I've read SEC rush seems to be really competitive. I dont get that feel at vandy and I know we're not the average SEC school. I'm not a legacy and haven't looked into getting recs. Should I look into recs or should I be fine? Thanks for reading.

Welcome to GC! Since I went to Ole Miss, I can't really answer your question with authority. However, it is my opinion that having a rec is a good idea. From reading threads on GC, I've learned that at a lot of colleges, having a rec will neither hurt nor help. Vandy may very well be one of those colleges, but it seems that the ones like that are not so much in the South.

When hundreds of women are trying to distinguish themselves and make themselves memorable, having a rec might just be the thing needed for a GLO to choose one PNM over another. A rec is a letter of introduction which can include insights into a PNM's personality that a short conversation may not reveal.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Set yourself up to succeed! Provide a resume or a letter to ALL the chapter houses on campus.

Absolutely have recs, for each sorority on campus! If you don't know someone from one of them, get in touch with the local Alumnae Panhellenic Association, and they will help you. Don't let yourself get totally "sold" on just one group - prior to recruitment, many of us are convinced that XYZ is the only group for us, but end up loving another group even more! Keep your mind open!

Read the couple thousand posts here on GreekChat on what to do/what not to do/weird rush experiences as homework. There are some real gems available!

I'm always happy to see someone still in high school getting their ducks in a row now, rather than the last minute - good luck to you, and keep us posted!

I believe Miss 7seven is already a student (freshman) at Vanderbilt and they - Vandy - have deferred recruitment so rush is coming up for them.

Hijack: Go Kentucky! Beat Vandy! (game is this Saturday 11.12)

Recruitment at Vanderbilt is competitive. Don't take my word for it; check out what the Office of Greek Life says in the "Parents" section of its website:

". . .the system of fraternity/sorority recruitment at Vanderbilt is competitive. Not everyone who wants to be Greek will receive a bid."

About recommendations: if you check out some of the websites for sorority chapters at Vandy, you will see that some of them have officers with titles like "reference chair." Recommendations (or "references") from alums are in fact helpful at Vandy. Please take the advice that others have given and try to get at least one recommendation for each sorority. Lots of the women going through recruitment will have them, and you should too, if possible. Best wishes.

Southern schools are competitive, period, regardless of school size or conference affilation (i.e. SEC, Conference USA). The school that I attend is not a SEC school and it has over 20,000 students, but rush is competitive.

Defiently get recs and know what your chances are of getting a bid. Just because you get a rec, doesn't mean you'll receive a bid.

Good luck!

If you cannot get a rec for each sorority at Vanderbilt then send a picture, resume, and unofficial transcript of your grades to each house. At least that way they will know who you are when you walk in the door. I have heard that Vanderbilt is very competitive from friends who went there.

It appears very detailed.

Though, I am a southern girl in yankeeland.. I believe you can NEVER go wrong with recs. According to the website 55% of the women at Vanderbilt are members of the Greek community. The avg. chapter size is 166, with all but one chapter between 162-177 members. Stats-wise I would say that is competitive!

Definitely get recs!

And good luck! I'm excited to see someone on GC going through rush. I'm an old grad student, and my sorority isn't at Vandy, so I won't be involved at all ... but I am amazed by how different southern Greek life is from what I saw at my school and with my friends elsewhere (all Midwestern or West coast). I have never seen people wear their letters so frequently in my life!

Talking

Wow, didn't mean to get everyone all excited! I guess grad school requires a lot more actual work than working ever did, and my web-surfing time is limited these days. No more sitting in my cubicle hoping my boss doesn't catch me ...
