Country clubs/golf courses are the usual around here.

I'm partial to beaches myself. Or Vegas.

Did anyone have an engagement party? We're having one during the holidays, since we are both away at school, as a chance for our families to meet. (BTW, the bottom of the invitation states in lovely, obvious font "Your presence is our only gift".) I've had family members on my side tell me that "No one has an engagement party" or that we're "being selfish".

Did we do something wrong?
I had mine back in August and people were asking about gifts and where our registry was...It was strange..I just said there presence was enough..but I still ended up with a few bottles of wine and gift cards

Not that I can tell.

Most of the e-parties I've been to have said "no gifts" but most people will still bring you something just being polite (gift card to the store you've registered at if you've done that already, wine, etc).

I don't think they're selfish at all. Just a nice way for your friends and family to celebrate the engagement and meet each other. No big deal.

Now if you have it on a holiday weekend, make it black tie and ask for gifts, then yes, it's a little much. lol.

That's what I was thinking. We don't need (or want) a wedding twice. We just want everyone to have a few (or more) drinks, excellent food, and fun.

I am NOT a fan of theme weddings, ESPECIALLY Disney/Princess/Fairy Tale. They are generally hokey, cheesy, stupid....BUT Holy Gorgeous Classiness! I have a friend that is Alice Obsessed, and she posted it on FB. Makes me want to go back and have a big wedding. Ok, not really.

I understand the big-themed weddings better when you know that the bride or the groom is obsessed with the theme. I have attended a Black & Gold wedding, for instance.

One of my mother's best friends was named Alice, and had an Alice Room in her house. It was absolutely priceless - small table with a tea party, all the characters, hundreds of Alice dolls, and of course, painted Alice Blue!

I was in a black and gold wedding. Thankfully, the dresses were black and the flowers were gold, rather than the other way around.

The one I attended had gold lame dresses on the bridesmaids, black tuxes with gold lame cumberbands on the guys, white flowers with black & gold ribbons. It was pretty, but not me.
